Battle of Torgau: 3rd November 1760

Date of the Battle of Torgau:  3rd November 1760

Place of the Battle of Torgau:  At the town of Torgau in Saxony on the west bank of the Elbe River to the North of Dresden.

War:  The Seven Years War.

 Contestants at the Battle of Torgau:  Prussians against an Imperial Austrian Army comprising the various nationalities that made up the Austrian Army (Austrians, Hungarians, Bohemians, Silesians, Croats, Italians and Moravians) with a Saxon contingent.

Generals at the Battle of Torgau:  King Frederick II of Prussia, known as Frederick the Great, commanding the Prussian Army against Marshal Daun commanding the Austrian and Saxon Army.

Size of the Armies at the Battle of Torgau:  Prussians: 35,000 infantry, 13,500 cavalry and 309 guns.  Austrians:  42,000 infantry, 10,000 cavalry and 275 guns.

Winner of the Battle of Torgau:  The Prussians, albeit with very heavy losses.

Prussian cavalry cheer and swords raised as they pass Frederick


The Prussian make the first move and advance on the Austrian canter.


Austrian cavalry move to at a great cheer from the infantry as they advance on the Prussian left.


Orders are given to load the guns and set the sights at long range


The range is set and the opening shots are fired.


A officer urges his men forward and artillery kicks up the ground around them.


Austrian left center, they men watch as the Prussian sweep forward.


Austrian skirmish are sent forward to delay them.


Prussian give to order to screen the ranks as they push forward on the Austrian left center.


More Prussian ranks are to attack the Austrian left center.


On the Austrian right they give to order to draw sabre and charge the Prussian dogs.


On the Austrian left center the Prussian find it hard as artillery and ranks of Austrians open fire.


Austrian right flank Cavary counter attack each other, this checks the Prussian cavalry during the battle.


After a hard push over the field the Prussian artillery setup for shot on the Austrian center.


Austrian left center, this is where the Prussians found it hard.


Austrian regiments move in support to attack the Prussian on the left center, the Prussians
are demoralized as the news reach the men that the King is wounded and has been moved from the battlefield.


The center of Torgau the Austrian are now weak after putting so many men on there left.

The Prussian reserve are sent to support the weakening attack on the Austrian left.


Austrian right center advance to the foot of the ridge while the artillery pound.

Overall it was a great game, the Austrian cavalry checked the Prussian cavalry on both
flanks and stop them from attacking the hill, while the Prussians had a tough time trying
to break the Austrian left center, to at one stage the Austrians almost broke through the
Prussian advance and the reserves save the day and plugged the gap.
The Austrian center became weak because of the effort they put into the attacks on the left
and even though it was very close fought the Prussian did manage to break the center.
