Wars of the Roses Livery Question
« on: 23 October 2012, 10:14:35 AM »
Hello,
I have been assembling some of the Perry WotR infantry for some medieval skirmish.  I had thought I might split them up for Percy-Neville feuding.  However, in researching livery colors, it seems both used black and red.  This seems like it might become a bit confusing.  Does anyone have any suggestions on differentiating the two sides?  Or perhaps an alternate match-up in place of the Percy-Neville scheme?
Thanks, Chris

Use the respective badges on each of the retinue's.  ;)

You could cheat bit and make one side bright shades and the other duller tones.
Try one side as "bright red with navy blue" and the other side "burgundy with dark grey".

I am doing Swiss verses Burgundy.
Zurich, Luzern and Zug have turquoise blue and white (in life this is clearly lighter than the Burgundians)

Burgundians have Vallejo intense blue and white

It's a good question and I honestly haven't got a concrete answer. Liveries changed from time to time, so a livery in 1450 might not be the same as in 1485. Percy and Neville troops served alongside each other (relatively speaking) on the Northern Marches, so a joint colour scheme might have been really useful. The key protagonist in the Percy-Neville dispute was Lord Egremont, who was a Percy younger son and who might not have used Black/Red. The Nevilles also seem to have used Red/Black, as evidenced by the garter stall plates of Montagu and iirc Salisbury, which are usually on the money.

You're not the only one wondering about this btw Link.

Other famous feuds you might like include; Pastons versus the Duke of Norfolk, Lord Berkeley versus Viscount Lisle, Earl of Devon versus Lord Bonneville and Kynastons versus Stranges. The Duke of Buckingham was involved in one with someone whose name has slipped mind too. AFAIK these all used different liveries, so the colour problem shouldn't arise.

Alternatively paint one lot Red/Black and the others Black/Red  ;D

Chris,

you can't go wrong with different badges. This mis one reason why various retinues of various notables wore them  :)

Chris, I've been asking similar livery questions and have found Arlequin a mine of information. I'm looking at using Ralph Percy and have assumed red and black (not sure on any badge he may have used?). However I've gone for one of my favourites, William Neville in white and blue as a contrast. Besides he was the local lord here and is buried no more than ten minutes from where I type.
