Blood in the South - A wars of the roses feud
« on: November 13, 2012, 07:08:21 PM »
Hi all, i recently played a Wars of the Roses game, using the modified Dux Britanniarum rules. This battle pitches Adam, a vengeful Lancastrian against his rival Hammond, who he thinks is a traitor and forced him into exile.

The Yorkist forces, with militia archers on the slope and Hammonds retinue soldiers ready to move around the house of the hill.

The Lancastrians, led by a band of hardened German mercenaries. Mounted men at arms and some english archers are behind them.

The Germans advance on the militia, who stand in closed ranks and loose a Volley! on the mercs.

The Germans close ranks and charge in. The militia have been reinforced by the Yorkist men at arms and a bittrer fight breaks out.

Urged by Hammond, the militia force the Germans back.

Peter, the German captain, pulls his men back before they break, but four men run for the hills, despite Adam's efforts.

Meanwhile on the other flank, the mounted men at arms charge the billmen who break without a fight (12 shock and 1 kill!) and the archers flee too. The billmen are cut down.

The Germans regroup and advance again, and the militia are unsure who to face.

Hammond and his men at arms catch the cavalry who have strayed too close.

'Bring it on!'

A volley takes out three Germans, and the last man desides to leg it. The veterans stay and march on to charge up the hill.

The militia are forced off the hill and their leader struggles to rally them.

The Lancastrian archers loose a volley at the militia, who continue to retreat.

Hammond takes a gamble and charges the Germans, but is breaten and his men flee. His force breaks and leave the field.

The German losses on the slope:

There are a few extra pics on my blog, if you wish to look.

The rules worked well, and to my surprise only 12 Yorkists died and 13 Lancastrians. Morale was more of a deciding factor, which was better than having half the men dead as what usually seems to happen in my other games.
The game's a bit smaller than Silent Hunter's and Captain Blood's game. One day i'll have the same amount of figures as them, but for now my painted collection's more modest.

Nice to see you continue your migration of Dux Britanniarum and that it turned out well.

Best regards Michael

Nice work.

How do the "Dux Britanniarum" rules work for the period?
I am not familiar with them - are they individual figure skirmish or can you handle larger units?
Is it possible or even easy to multiply this up to 150 figures per side?

Thanks
Mick

Well, it certainly looked like a fun game! Thanks for sharing.
Measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with an axe, hammer to fit, paint to match!

Thanks for posting
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

It's a nice, elegant system that works well for pretty much any medieval setting, hope your battles go well.

I practicaly use the Dux Britanniarum rules are they are, with some name changes and a new fate deck. I think they work well for the period, being mostly combat orientated, with missile mostly for casuing shock rather than kills (on most men, you need a 6 on a d6).
The rules are written for games of around 40 men a side, but funnly enough someone on the Toofatlardies yahoo group their ideas for using them for bigger games. You could use them for bigger games, just instead of using 6 men in a unit, have more (just an idea!).
You could give it a go, or i might try  ::)

Most excellent and thanks for sharing, really nice paintjobs on those miniatures especially the cavalry! I also like the terrain mat as I have two of them at home for gaming  ;)

Good info and looked like a fun clash. Eyeing up using that Dux for Hoplite battles (as with most, I'm obsessed apparently with taking rules and using them for other periods).

The mat is actually a green carpet, and the low slope wasn't actually supposed to be there. It's a fold because the material's quite stiff compared to most mats.

Go for it, it should work, being pretty much like dark age battles.

The exact same matt I just need to cut mine who's roughly 1.5m x 2m in smaller pieces and I have two of those mats  ;D They were dirt cheap so why not I thought  lol
