Colonial Marines

Hi all,

I have just ordered some of the new Pig Iron figures and whilst waiting for them to be delivered dug out my old, half finished Colonial Marines from Gripping Beast/Woodbine Design.




Asyou can see the bases need completing and Ripley, at the front needs a coat of matt varnish.  The figure to the right of Ripley is the smart gunner, Drake.



The second picture is of Hudson in the centre with the motion tracker with Hicks on the right with a shotgun.  Ferro is the pilot on the left.

For aliens, you might consider the ones from East Riding Miniatures? They're sort of chunky, much like the Gripping Beast CMC.

I painted up some of the first plastic space marines as pseudo colonial marines but it just wasn't the same! I wish I'd heard of Denizen back then. Sgt McNab, are you looking to get some colonists too?

I did the LEG boardgame; saw it done at a few Denver cons decades ago, and had to follow suit.

The board was basically a cabinet drawer, used flame-sculpted styrofoam for the walls. Looked okay, but a friend replaced with wild walls.

Another friend converted some Future Wars figs, and have to say looked darn good, though Vasquez ended up a bit 'cantilevered'.  

Haven't pulled it out in years; suppose I best consider doing so.

Elk101, I'm not sure at the moment.  I'm more of a painter than a gamer but if you read my blog you will see that I am thinking of playing Space Hulk with the figures taking the place of Terminators, but am having difficulty in aquiring Aliens.  Although Earther recommended East Riding MIniatures, and I like the look of them.

I'm not sure what figures are available for Colonists so will keep an open mind.

I have undercoated the bases so will try and get them finished soon and provide an update.

Fantastic paint job on those. I think your painting does these figures more justice then the ones on the website. I've considered using them but was turned off by what I saw. Now that I see your work and the Dawn of the Lead blog I'm changing my mind. Speaking of blogs, what do you call your blog?

In a 'money where my mouth is' moment I've purchased the Colonial Marines Technical Manual so we'll see where that leads. With aliens in mind I also bought some GW genestealers from ebay to cut up. I'll try and get some hormagants too for variety with Heresy lurker heads. This might be an option for you Sgt? I am also warming to the ERM ones too though. I'm stuck on colonists though. This needs to be relatively low cost (apparently it is now a new project!) so figure price will be ab issue.

I'll look forward to seeing more of your stuff.

I did similar.  I painted the names of ten of the characters on my first ten plastic space marines back in the late eighties. "Wierzbowski" was a pain in the ass


Lovely work on the figures shown.  You did a really great job of representing the two types of camo on the uniforms.  Like 99% of the people here, I really must get working on my Aliens project.  The Gripping Beast figures are quirky sculpts, but I really like them.

Is there any chance you could explain the process used for painting the camo patterns?

The colour scheme is;

BDU's - Base Vallejo Khaki, highlight, Vallejo German Beige Cammo, 2nd highlight Vallejo Beige Cammo and Vallejo Buff.
The cammo for the BDU's green and brown.  The green I use is Vallejo Extra Dark Green and the brown is Vallejo English Uniform.  I will then mix things up with Buff stripes.  I never highlight the green and brown patches though as I find it looses some of the realism.

The Body Armour is a base of Vallejo Russian Green with light green, brown and grey cammo in stripes.

Some of the figures have helmet covers painted the same way as the BDUs and some are in the same colour as the armour.

All the figures have the USA flag on their left arm and the Colonial Marine Screaming Eagle badges on the right.  There are added touches on certain figures, such as Drakes baseball cap has the USS Sulaco badge.  If you purchase the Aliens Technical Manual all of the badges are shown.

As I paint in the garage I have to wait for daylight to take pictures so over the weekend I will update close ups for you.
