Hawkwind and Priming The Ila...
« on: 07 December 2012, 06:54:08 PM »
The latest offering from Zulu Dalek.

What colour should I choose to prime my Ila figures? How did an advert for Ford cars help solve this problem.

What does everyone else think? Black or white primer for African Natives?

Prime in Black THEN dry brush the whole figure in off white. This will show the figure in great detail and give you automatic highlighting! somewhere in your painting process do a brown wash to stain and cover any little white spots left over and not cover in your painting process. Well that's the process I use... lol

Hawkwind, my first ever gig at the Palace in Manchester back in 1976 or before. Memories are made of this   :)

Thanks for the YouTube Magnu Plynkes. Great stuff. In the next Ila post I will be trying out three or four of the ideas members have shared. Keep them coming.

Cheers One and All

I see that Huw Lloyd-Langton died on Friday 07/12/12. He was only 61.

Space Ritual, In Search of Space, Doremi Fasol Latido and Warrior on the Edge of Time are amongst my favourite albums. I saw HW regularly twice a year at de Montfort Hall when I lived in Leicester.

I've been using black undercoat (Halford's finest), and then an artist's burnt umber coat, which is somewhat translucent, then a drybrush of burnt umber + lighter flesh tone. Very quick, I managed 20 figures on Thursday night. Mind you my figures don't look as good as the ones people have been posting here...

Drop into Halfords and pick up a tin of their matt brown. Its in their Camouflage range of paints. It gives a very matt finish and is a dark brown colour. Its the perfect base coat for african flesh.

Hm, that's a great idea, I think I'll try that on my next batch.

BTW I see that Foundry are about to bring back a lot of discontinued Darkest Africa moulds.

Second the use of brown for an undercoat for darker skin tones.  Don't have photos up yet but I'm really pleased with the effect.  I tried a few "top" colors and I think a heavy wash of burnt umber over the brown base coat turned out really well.

I use exactly VonKludge's method, and it is quick, easy, and effective.

I was just perusing the Halfords site and I noticed that they do a Khaki camouflage spray too. I may have to arrange an expedition soon, to the darkest region of...Didcot.

Thanks for all the suggestions....my decision will be announced soon.

There is a splendid article by Tim Beresford in Battlegames 32 on this subject. This worthy periodical has been taken under Atlantic Publishers' wing and by way of an appetite whetter is being given away free with the latest Miniature Wargames. Sadly this special bonus edition only appears to be available at WH Smiths.
