some time ago I built this surfacing VSF tunneling machine and always wanted to play inside

So here is my first attempt to paint a floor plan for a VSF game

I figured that the machine room would be at the front and then the command section (the view to the front is not very good anyhow   ), then the living quarters, storage and fuel tanks and an emergency escape at the end in case you get stuck (will be a long way through the tunnel back to the surface)

what do you think? The real thing is of course much bigger but the file size would burst the forum...

(did the Nautilus aswell, using the Disney plans)

Ooh - I LIKE it !!!

I hope you get to build the interior too...
Enjoying the game is ALWAYS more important than winning the game.

  no I won't build any interior, the idea was to just use the floor plan to play on it. All details are on the plan. It is the Hero Quest approach (I actually really like that game, cause it started my interest in lead)
I know it is a cheap way of doing interior (looking at some of the great models that are shown here on the forum) But gaming inside of houses, ships, submarines etc always feels kinda wrong...I find it hard to move the minis around. And when you play inside a structure the game has more RPG aspects as compared to an open table wargame (am I wrong here?)
Hard question: Where is the border between realism and playability?

The gaming tile is actually twice the size shown here. 1 square measuring around 1" as in normal gaming tiles.

Thats very cool.  thanks for sharing with us.  I kinda like the RPG aspect rather than a regular wargame type game.  I guess that why I sledom play games and just paint.  Now me, I would build a ship and interior.

That's cool. I'd like to get hold of a copy of that if it's possible? 8)

I really like it. Do you have a gallery with photos of your creations?

Nice work on the interior floorplan!

Got a good source for the textures and stuff you used? I've been doing a bit of paper model creation, and finding usable textures (or creating them) is 75% of the work!

Darquebus - floorplan looks great. What tools did you use to create it?

Thanks for the nice comments
uhhh try to answer the questions....

I used photoshop to create the thing, using lots of layers for the shadow effects etc
The textures are mostly created using what I can find on the web...so if I see a wood or metal photo I take a part of it and create a pattern from it.
E.g. the sofa is made from just a picture of piece of leather, I add shadows etc and pretty much painted the whole thing from scratch.
It takes quite a while to make these things and the file is very large (cause it has to be printed and put together in a "playable" quality. The drill is a little over a meter long, the nautilus is even bigger.

It probably takes not as long as building the "real" model, but I spend quite a few evenings on my laptop to put it together. And once you have done something nice (e.g a sofa) I re-use (maybe just change the color), so it goes faster the more often you paint something. Don't know what to do next...any ideas! :D  I might be able to do something and then get it onto a website somewhere to share it (don't know about the size though)

I thimk it is a good alternative if you want to play inside something.
NOTHING beats a "real" modeled table with rocks and trees and caves and rivers see below

http://forum.backofbeyond.de/viewtopic.php?p=31929&highlight=darquebus#31929

but when it comes to a submarine, the table top model has to be smaller to  make it playable in a wargame, so there is not enough room for proper interior, or the model has to be soooo big that is will take up the whole table...with the floor plans, no problem. And they are easy to store (no trouble with my wife  I allready take up most of the garage for my wargaming stuff...

There are pictures of some other stuff I have done on this forum...uh...but where?  :?: Was it this what you were looking for?

I really like those floorplans. If there was enough interest would you think about making some for sale?

I suggest anyone who is interested post and say so. 8)

I consider floorplans to be perfectly acceptable for gaming, and would not be ashamed to show off a game that took place on a 2d surface.

I would also strongly consider buying a set of VSF machine floorplans.

Very nice work! I have a bad habit of buying all sorts of 2d scenery products - Rackham, Zero Hour, SkeletonKey Games, Fat Dragon Games, The Forge Studio, etc. My usual excuse is "Hey! I can use these as templates for modelling them in 3d!".  I think the real reason is that I consider them as works of art, something I could never do.  I'm a good copier - give me a set of instructions or a painting guide and I can do almost anything - but I am not an originator.  That's why I take so long to do a project on my own - I can't always visualize it completely.  If I ever get a digital camera, though, I'll be able to put my money where my mouth is!
I too would be willing to purchase these plans, to add to my collection of 'templates'!
Why take Life seriously? You'll never get out of it alive!
