Expanding the Khurasan Salamen
« on: 29 January 2013, 03:09:30 PM »
You never know what models gamers will respond to and decide to adopt as their own.  These, for instance, are my 15mm Salamen:

I had them made mostly for myself, for fun, but they turned out to be extraordinarily popular, so it's high time I expanded them.

I'm thinking of a war beast, a customary weapon for reptilians and other cold blooded humanoids.  Was considering having something made either like this chap:

Or like this one:

The first fellow would have a box on his back that figurines would go into.  The second would have baskets on either side of the sail.  Any preference?

I like the first one. Even better, put some frills on the side of the head and make it a giant mud dog.

Hi, actually, Dimetrodon (which was not a dinosaur btw) was not found in arid terrain -- he seems to have wondered into it in the image though!  Dimetrodon lived in wetlands, so would be in the same environs as the Salamen.

But it seems academic at this point as the responses so far have been strongly pro-Eryops.   :-)

I'd go with the Eryops myself, or something similar.  Nothing against Dimetrodon, but there are a bunch of entertaining temnospondyls and things that don't get as much fanfare.  You could easily keep the army theme within amphibia (or at least, within 'non-amniote tetrapoda') without nerfing it too much.

Plus, lavishly atmospheric painting vs. sterile computer model might have something to do with the decision.

Dragontooth did a giant horned camilion as one of their battle beasts back in the 70s-80s.

I dont know if you ever heard of the "StarFist" book series. They had a race of aliens called skinks and they used Acid guns. Might be nice extra support pack for your Sci-fi Salamen the Meso-Nai.
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

I have used a similar thing for my Garn. Since I see them as the winners of the Uplifts that occured on their planetary systems, they have enslaved the other Reptiloids and amphibiots to their aggressive will.

I have added some giant Saurians as pack mules and controlled destroyers by modifying some GW Warmaster Lizardmen units.

Overall very blurry shot(sorry) with the Carnisaur, Triceratops and Stegadon. The Stegadon has Howdahs on the side that I put grenade launchers in. The Carnisaur has a mind control module on his back, as does the triceratops.

So howdah, platforms, baskets, etc on dinos is very good in my mind.

Love those!

I went with a creature inspired by eryops. They're quite fun -- being master cast now.  Two of them were made so you can field a herd without their being all duplicates, and a large howdah was made as well that can hold quite a number of Salamen.

As a command element a Salaman king was made, to sit in a throne atop a howdah.  He's actually depicted rising out of his throne, leading the attack....

You might want to have a look at our lizard and howdah before you commit to the plastic turtle though.  ;-)

I love the chief, I hope the crew can be bought separately.

Any plans to bring out more salamen, civilians perhaps?
