Bug figures (threads)
« on: March 07, 2013, 04:54:00 PM »
I know we have talked extensively about "Bugs" but is there a single thread where we listed all the manufacturers?   ???

My goal is to finish my Bug Army for SF games.   o_o

Size/scale is not a driving factor as much as style.   8)

I plan to have multiple types of "Bugs" that share the following characteristics:

6 plus limbs (Arms/legs/etc.) with 6 to 8 being the goal and a high of 10 to 12 limbs
Some with and some without weapons - melee and missile as it were
Multiple sized figures from tiny infiltrator/assassin bugs to Tanker bugs

Gracias,

Glenn

...Scale?   :P

Assuming you know already, but if you're after 15mm (I think you're a 15mms scale man, right?) then you might consider Khurasan Miniatures. He's got quite a few cool bugs, including some huge ones.

(Also, do you have two accounts on LAF?)

A bit scale-less because of the subject matter, so perfect for you I suppose; Defiance Games Bugs.

I had to wait so long for my order of one box, I had already written the money off as a loss, as there was also zero return communication; very excremental service, but the figures (when I finally got them) are actually pretty nice.

6 seperate limbs, seperate thorax, abdomen and head, so fully poseable, plus a 30mm base. They're this plastic/resin blend you see a lot of these days, and regardless of my opinion on that material (I'm a metal man myself), a bit of superglue gets them solidly built in no time. There is some flash on the limbs to take into account, but nothing major. Also, the front limbs should be easily converted to hold a weapon of choice.

Not too expensive either; 30 for $24,99 if I recall correctly, so a nice choice, if you have the patience of an Old One that is... ::)
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

My scale of preference  :D   ;) is 1/600th (turning my 1/300th stuff into 1/600th,) but for SF skirmish, small battle games (which is what we are talking about in this thread,) my basic Human forces are 1970's/1980's "25 mm" (to top of head) from Grenadier and Reviresco.

Thanks, will check those out.  And I will keep that "patience" aspect in mind.

"Size/scale is not a driving factor as much as style..."

Yes, one for work (issues with multiple firewalls and personal e-mail) which I use waiting for the systems to "process" data,) and one for at home.

Plynkes raised that question a short time ago on another part of the forum.  I do try not to answer myself...

Our parasachnids are very popular.  There are soldiers, winged soldiers and a tanker.  Here are some soldiers, from a customer's blog (hope he doesn't mind!):

These are in 15mm scale but as you can see in the image, they are meant to be largish, similar to the warriors in the ST movie, so can work as medium sized bugs in 28mm scale as well.  The tanker is big even for 28mm scale -- its first set of legs has evolved into a spout cover for the bioplasma spout on its thorax.

We also have a brain bug that just needs to get up on the store (it's cast and ready for sale) as well as an egglayer -- a queen but not the controller of the swarm.  (So she's more passive -- the brains do the thinking, as brains are wont to do.)

I have just started getting the 28mm versions made as well.  The soldier is all made and just needs to be painted for the store.  It's huge!  And an all-metal casting, so no fussing with building plastic kits.  I'll release those first, then, if sales warrant, I'll have the tanker redone in 28mm scale, and that will be REALLY huge!  :-)

Those are good but for "bulk" armies they seem a bit expensive per figure (Terror-mites seem on the edge for my expense account.)

As an update I ordered 10 packs of GZG 6 mm bugs (swarms) (arrived already) and I have an order out for Khurasan  (IIRC, http://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/bugswarm.jpg, some Vespulid Aliens.)

Maybe next time some Mantis Men [with some Gopher Wolf figures (pets, you know),] for variety.

Gracias,

Glenn

The Defiance Games bugs look great and are priced nicely but being cautious since I retire in 2016.   ;)

Actually it more a matter of priorities but the excremental service thing does have an impact on the ordering queue.   ::)

I liked the look of the Defiance bugs until I saw them against a 28mm figure:

Actually I think those are great for 25+ mm troops - I have envision "Giant" bugs 'grunts' as being around human size and a bug that size would be devastating against non-Power Armor (PA) troops.  And dangerous for some PA troops even...

The 20 mm soldiers against those bugs might look better to some.

Now if you play ion 10-15 mm soldiers then these might be considered as "Tank equivalents" in some ways.

Too close to Christmas to get them right now though.  Appreciate the comparison shot very much!

Glenn

Perhaps I've been spoilt by all the mongoose bugs, each to their own of course, but for 20mm or smaller they'd be fine. Not that I'd expect Defiance to fufill any order I might make.
