Well, you're much welcome to join. Personally I don't care for the LPL and find that the forum activity seems to sort of stop while it's on, so maybe the challenge will drown in it. But we'll see.  :)

With only 30 entering the LPL, that cannot be used as an excuse by those on here not participating.

Dr, a quick question: Can I use a box with similar dimensions?

I have a standard box that reams of paper come in which is only slightly smaller.
Can I use that?

Please!
You will save me an exoensive trip to IKEA.
The box may be cheap, but I am bound to purchase something else while I am there.
 :D

The answer is 'yes'.

I've given the dimensions of the box in the first post. Any box of those outer dimensions or less is OK to use. You are allowed to construct your own unfolding box as well. Or a motorized box that powers a small ski lift in your game.

Anything will do. As long as the sacred dimensions are adhered to

Just for super nit quicky clarification: the box doesn't need to appear as a terrain piece? Or part of the game? (Other than the obvious transportation application)

Cheers

This assumption is correct.

Now this, I want to see.

However, I am one of the 30 in LPL7, so I'll be watching this one from the sidelines. I already use banker's boxes, though, which are roughly similar dimensions to this Ikea box, and it's a fantastically useful size. A bit of planning and luck can tuck more than enough scenery for a crowded 6x4 or bigger table into a box this size!

I did a two-part hill for pulp jungle/Lost World gaming that was in two halves, designed to provide the bottom layer of a banker's box otherwise full of jungle bits; Here's the hill pieces fitted into the bottom of the box, and if you scroll up you can see the construction of the hill.

Just what I'm going to do. And I'll fit orthogonal ruin pieces in the corners first. :-D

Darn.
I found the perfect box which has two dimensions which are smaller, which is fine, and one dimension which is one centimetre longer on the outside - but having thick walls, it's the same size on the inside. It violates the sacred dimensions and must be replaced  :(
I'm in if I find a suitable box (I have more stringent constraints - high rigidity, in case one of the cats sits on it; good looking, as it might be stored where visible; resistant to cat fur).
I'll probably have managed to find the box by the end of this event in fact....   ::)

just wondered how much it would cost to have a PAPPIS box sent in the post, to save me the hassle of driving up the road to Coventry.

PAPPIS box = £0.80p
Postage = £50

WTF!  :?

If I remember correctly, Ikea have a policy regarding deliveries that is solely dependant on where you live and disregards how much you are buying.
Same price for a PAPPIS box as it is to convey a housefull of flat pack furniture.

BONKERS!

Use a standard paper box.
Only slightly smaller and easier to get hold of.

OK, I will advice against this option.

Constructing a box (or finding one) yourself will save you money. But maybe not time.

incase anyone is bored enough to know:

Pappis box dimensions: width 25cm, depth 34 cm and height 26cm
                                         Vs.
Printer paper box (five ream from office depot): W 22cm, D30.5 cm, H 24 cm.

Not a huge difference.

When planning mine I realised one particular detail could be of interest: weight!
A lightweight set would of course be more portable, and would be easier to store on a high shelf.

May I suggest a spin based on this? Weighing the box and contents to find the weight of the whole package.

In this category, I would fail miserably - unless the prize were for the heaviest box+contents, which I would win hands down  :D  - at least unless someone is using solid lead terrain.
