Combat drone from Hotwheels Batman toy
« on: 18 March 2013, 02:14:14 AM »

Hey I just wanted to show off a new addition to my Hell Knights mercenary army.  This is a combat drone I converted from a Batman Toy.  I was thinking about making it into a one man air speeder but the cockpit was a little small and hart to get to with paintbrushes so I went with a drone instead.  The only big conversion I made to the model was to clip off a pair of weird rotos on the underside and add a missile launcher from an Imperial Guard Sentinel.  I'm going to be adding a better flight stand soon.  This is the one that came with the toy.

Here is a shot of the toy out of the package.  It cost less than $8.00.

Ah man, Ironworker, that is one seriously cool find (and paint job)! It looks really good next to those 28mm minis.

Great stuff,

Nice work. I think I got one of them somewhere, so consider that idea stolen.

looks good! I like the camo, how did You do it?

don't You think it might look better if the flight base is a bit higher?

Yes I am going to put it on a better base.  This is the one that came with the toy.  I'll probably just get a GW flying base for it as soon as I get a chance.

As far as the camo goes I just block the base colors in then I carefully drybrush the whole model with a very light sandy colored tan.  After that I I add other details then wash the whole model with a burnt umber wash.  I put a drop of two of dark blue and a few drops of Future floor wax into the wash as well.  After that I paint other details and the metallic weathering.  That's pretty much how I painted those troops as well.  It goes pretty fast when you have an army to paint.  I've found that you can be really loose on larger areas on any model then take a bit more time on certain details to produce a nice paint job for an army project.

amazing idea !!

reminds me that my little boy has this Tron airplane somewhere in his room

it  will make a perfect drone too...add some missiles and put some paints...and you've got a nicely futuristic Predator ready to battle !!!

Helps reduce surface tension and creates a nice flow to the was. Old trick bud.

Yeah it's an old trick that comes over from modeling.  By breaking up the surface tension it makes the wash flow and cover better and reduces water spots.  It's even used a lot of miniature building for the movie industry.  There are other cool things you can do with it like make glazes that can tint clear plastic parts.
