rules suitable for 2'x2' games tables
« on: 08 April 2013, 11:20:09 AM »
Inspired by Silversixx's 2' x 2' table project, and having storage problems for larger size tables, what game rules of any genre are suitable for this size of surface?
I know of a couple (such as Pulp Alley, Confrontation), but would be interested in winding my horizons.

Eden (Taban), D&D Miniatures skirmish (WotC), Gloire (RatTrap) or Normandy Firefight if you use 20mm figures.

Irregular Wars: Conflict at the World's End

These are rules for small scale actions between 1519-1641, I heartily recommend them, lovely little system, plenty of scope for tweaking if you want to, easy to learn and play and they do keep a period feel, plus you don't need huge numbers of figures either. The pdf with rules, army lists etc is only £6 from Vexillia, and you can see sample pages too

http://www.vexillia.ltd.uk/common/shop_books.html#19

There's also a blog (which has some very nice posts on SoBH too!)

Sorry if it sounds like an advert, I'm just very much in favour of the rules!  :D

From our club's game list, AE: Bounty (when using space ship boarding scenarios), Infinity the Game (if using loads of terrain and preferably smallish forces of up to ca. 5 models per side) and MERCS. If you aren't allergic to board/map-based miniature games (AKA games using minis, variable board/maps and having no fixed campaign to follow), then also Dust Tactics and Sedition Wars. These are all scifi of course, well more or less.

The Rattrap games (.45 Adventure!, Fantastic Worlds, Gloire, Broadsword Adventure) are all designed for a 2x2 board.

And this ^
Were the reasons I built the board in the first place :)
Nice that I could inspire!

Forum member Henrix was actually the reason why I did the board. And his fantastic solution with 2x2 feet pre-framed painting cloths are even more awesome. I only got this pic (one of the Bushido battles I had during Gothcon against the "King of Puns"). Henrix has also done all the terrain, the corresponding thread can be found here.

I must confess that I'm also looking for more games suitable for 2x2 gaming. So far I've been a bit unimpressed by MERCS (and they say it's best at 2x3). So Eden might be the next thing (if it wasn't for the freakishly large miniatures).

Good grief!
That's already more than I bargained for!
Thanks for the recommendations - VERY helpful, and hopefully will not turn out to be too expensive to investigate diligently and try out. I had forgotten to list 0.45; most of the others are new to me.
Silversixx - yes, that thread of yours got me thinking. I do have a larger table, about 7'x4', but that lives in our cellar, which is very damp, and is composed entirely of stone or ceramic parts and scenery to survive in the damp. No way a grassy terrain of any sort would do that; ditto wood. So thanks for the inspiration.
Scurv - I read that 18'x24'   :o first time round and almost fainted ! 18"x24" is just right.  :D

The list so far - the  ??? smiley represents details to be added when I have time to research - unless anyone wants to fill these in...

The list includes name of game, scale (I am aware other scales could be used for some of these; and I have slapped a generic 28mm for 25-32mm scale), genre or theme. Any corrections welcome. Will create a clearer list once details are filled in.

Pulp Alley 28mm pulp
0.45 Adventure 28mm pulp
Confrontation 28mm fantasy
Eden  ??? fantasy
D&D Skirmish  ???  ???
Gloire   28mm swashbuckler
Normandy Firefight 20mm WWII
Force on Force 15mm  ???
Conflict at the World's End 28mm 1519-1641
Bushido 28mm fantasy, Japanese theme
AE: Bounty ??? sci fi
Infinity 28mm sci fi
MERCS  ??? sci fi
DUST tactics 28mm WWWII
Sedition Wars 28mm sci fi
Fantastic Worlds  ???  ???
Broadsword Adventure  ???  ???
Larger than life  ???  ???
Ganesha titles  ???  ???  ???
HoTT  ???  ???
DBA 28mm historical
Scurv's WIP game    28mm future sports

All games I mentioned are nominally 28mm but as we all know, it tends to "bleed" towards 32mm these days. Official MERCS minis are the biggest of the lot IIRC, definitely more @ 32mm than at "true" 28mm. This last also applies to Eden.
