(UK) Supplies- Plasticard
« on: April 16, 2013, 08:48:19 PM »
Good Evening all,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me the best place to buy plasticard from in bulk? UK only I'm afraid!

Cheers
Andy

Is it worth contacting Slater's direct?
Measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with an axe, hammer to fit, paint to match!

I should maye stipulate that by bulk I mean 10-20 sheets... I can imagine that for some (like me this is definitely bulk) while for others (Mr Jimbibillobolly) it's just scratching the surface.

Does this slaters have a website?

Cheers
Andy

Evergreen is the other standard supplier in the UK

Do you have a local modelshop or railroad shop? Might be worth popping in and asking if they'll order in a batch for you.

Sadly we don't have a great selection here- I train shop that's open in frequent hours, a rpg shop whose stock never seems to change (it's one of those strange places where you can walk in after a year and nothing has changed; same collection of miniatures, same books, same few customers and the owner still flaunting the smoking ban), another hobby store that only stocks the over priced Galeforce 9 stuff. Maybe Colin and Andy will know somewhere.

Cheer though Dean!

If you have a Hobbycraft near you, my local one has a sale on Plastruct bits.....not too much stock but about 75% off....great in the short term but obviously means another place that won't be stocking it afterwards  :(

I love all forms of wargaming and model making, provided it is in good taste.

lol That sounds a lot like The Dragon & George (I think it was called) down near Saltmarket. That was about 15 years ago though!

Hi Andy,

The aforementioned Slaters sell a sheet 135cm x 66cm x 1mm in white for £27.32 plus shipping.

Other LAFers who sell plasticard include Geromino (Fenris) and me (miniatureMOJO) .... Can't think of any others at the mo.

If you want any significant quantity, avoid model suppliers and go straight to the manufacturer or distributor. I did this in OZ and got a lifetime supply for far, far less than the equivalent retail price.

The key is to search for HIPS (High Impact PolyStyrene) suppliers, a quick google in the UK and you find:

http://www.bayplastics.co.uk/hips.htm
http://www.cutplasticsheeting.co.uk/high-impact-polystyrene/
http://www.technologysupplies.co.uk/catalog/partlist.aspx?CategoryID=6782
http://www.hegner.co.uk/catalog/partlist.aspx?CategoryID=6782
http://www.rhnuttall.co.uk/plastics/high-impact-polystyrene/

You may find that some of the above are gloss instead of the matt you get in the hobby sheets, it's never bothered me as a quick rub with some fine wet and dry paper fixes that.

Cheers!

Try this site - Eileens Emporium. A store selling all sorts of model making material to modelmakers.

Ebay.  All thicknesses and in those quantities.

I use 'plasticard styrene' and 'plasticard styrene sheets' as the search terms, use the advance search button to pick details etc.  It helps you find more.

It can be a little hit and miss.

Also try 'Plastruct' for all the rods and tubes stuff and the textured stuff.

Thanks for the info guys,

If i'm going to be honest, I've never really used normal plasticard but it fits pretty well for my PAPPIS Challenge entry. I think I'll probably look for a range of sizes. Does anyone have a particular thickness that they find themselves using all the time?

Cheers
Andy

I use several different types and thickness, depending on what it's for. What are you building with it?

To be honest I imagine that it will be mostly for detailing work. Metal plates, coupling that sort of thing.

I think I'm probably best just ordering a selection and seeing what works. I'm still pretty new to all of this and ordering online doesn't allow you to get a real feel for the product.

Little has changed in those 15 years trust me!  lol If you are into the latest edition of D&D it's still a good place to pop into, but I find the lines incredibly limited.

Cheers
Andy
