How big for a typical game of VBCW?
« on: April 17, 2013, 08:59:37 PM »
A buddy and I are dipping our toes into the whole VBCW setting for games Currently I have 1 command element, 3 Units of 10 men, 1 unit of cavalry, 1 unit of Police and 2 units of 10 of militia, I have 1 88mm gun and plan on a tank or two...I can increase my numbers of regular infantry to 30 more figures but am kinda shy from doing this as they are from Rengade miniatures and are a tad bigger then my current GWM and Musketeer figures but only by 2mm or so...(my OCD)

first of all welcome to the madness that is VBCW

regard to how big a game is general is normal comes down to how many you want. have played games with five men a side to pu to 100 a side. really does come down to rules and player choose but about 30-40 seem normal.  :)

What he said.

It really is a case of how long is a piece of string. A small ambush, a raid, an arrest, right up to a pitched battle. If you take something like the Irish Civil War for comparison, the encounters they described as pitched battles could often be very small, (like maybe twenty on one side and forty on the other) but when we play our Big Games at Albanich or Reiver we have had several hundred figures on each side, and you can have quite a few sides. I think the biggest game I have played in probably had 1000 or so figures. The smallest had a couple of dozen.

Welcome to the madness of VBCW. I agree with the others, its totally down to you how big or small your games are. I would increase your militia though as they would be the most common combatants. My own Albertine army has two platoons of militia, one platoon of LDV (militia in uniform) and only one platoon of regulars. My Black Shorts army is one platoon of Black Shorts (again militia in uniform) and a platoon of militia. For vehicles I use two Matilda I's, two Rolls Royce armoured cars, one FT-17, a Whippet, a Romfell armoured car and numerous civilian vehicles some of which have improvised armour, all of these (except the Romfell which is strictly for the Black Shorts) get used by either side depending on the scenario.
