I am sure most of you will have seen my last LPL entry- winter survivors. Obviously they were painted for my Pappis box challenge game, and so their picture belongs here too. These miniatures are a combination of Mojo Miniatures, Hassle free Miniatures and Fenris Games Miniatures.

In addition to being Finnish  zombie slayers for my Pappis game, these guys will also serve as the basis for a Finish armed resistance, for my 28mm force on force games, as well as the possibility they might be Scifi civilians for AE bounty, explorers for a modern day 'Beyond the mountain of Madness' game  or even some sort of 'The Thing' scenario.

I would like some Finnish names for these guys (and girl) if anyone would like to christen them...

Theres more 28mm Superhero Madness at my blog, http://fourcoloursupers.blogspot.com/
And for Ultra-modern Wargaming check out Hotel Zugando at http://ultramoderngaming.blogspot.co.uk/

Great stuff, Rob!
Love them all.
 :-*

I intend getting some those SSS/Mojo casts myself later in the year, they are so good.
Got plenty to be getting on with for the moment and a potential house move in the offing means they will have to wait a while.

Looking good!

Regarding names, for an understanding and selection I'd suggest:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finnish_names

There's great articles/list for most languages on Wikipedia.

are they male or female?

All of the names Silversixx listed are male names.

Those are quite good name choices, I must admit. You can also combine them; eg. Jukka-Pekka, Ville-Pekka, Ari-Pekka etc.

Maybe for possible younger characters you can add Nico, Peetu, Joose, Sisu, Ukko, Väinö, Pyry (parents nowadays seem to like to name their babies either with bit foreign sounding names or then somewhat older names are making a comeback and "nature-based" names are used as well).

Some female names you could consider are: Maria, Marja, Laura, Taina, Tanja, Tuuli, Henna, Tanja, Tarja, Anne-Mari/Annemari...

And those painted survivors look damn fine!  :-* How many more are you going to have?

Have you considered flicking through the Ikea catalogue?

Seriously, for an IKEA PAPPIS challenge, what better place to look?

PAPPIS
HEMNES
BOKSEL
LINDVED
VITTJSO
STORNAS

DRONA
LEKMAN

Using solely Swedish names for a Finnish team could be considered either offensive or a political statement.

Using Swedish place names, other proper nouns and common nouns would be mainly odd (and possibly offensive).

We have stats here. Just note that the top-lists for first names are skewed because they include all given names. As a rule of thumb, many three-syllable names are only very popular as middle (second or third) names. They all can be used as first, though.

Just remember where the double consonant is. All good first names have one. ;)

And here's  a close up of my Finnish police van...

Hi Rob,

just bought similar van from a 2nd hand market for 2 euros, though it is in somewhat more beaten up condition. If you need second van in your project, let me know and I'll send it you asap.

edit: our military police use also VW vans, so if you want to use the van for your other Finland themed project, it is very fitting for that as well, just needs to have an army green paint job.

You did well. Bizarrely, I bought mine from a collector in California via US eBay. It wasn't very expensive but it cost me more than a couple of euros! I tried everything to find one more local, including using Google translator to trawl through page after page of popular Finnish toy shops. In the end the only one I could find was in the US- weird.
