Warlord Games' new hard plastic Romans

There is a free one on the cover of the latest Wargames Illustrated, for those who haven't seen it yet. Apparently they are adopting a similar philosophy to the Perrys - ie boxes of plastic "core troops" with the others being made up of white metal.

"Great!" I thought "I'm rapidly favouring plastics over metal for a variety of reasons, I've always loved Imperial Rome and this is a very nice moulding indeed, so this new range is perfect"

Except....


.... the figure is very small & appears to be a true 25mm as opposed to 28mm plus. With the current trend towards up-sizing, I'd expected them to be more compatible with the larger end of the 28mm market. Sadly they are too small for the smaller Perry and early Foundry end of the market.  :cry:

This means I have to stick exclusively with them, or ignore them & go metal  :x  They are going to release Celts [and presumably other enemies] so it may not be too bad, but even so it's disappointing.

The other potential problem is that the shields may be too small for those lovely decals that are available for 28mm.

Does anyone know why they decided to go for such small figures?

I am now officially a Perry slave and will be buying far too much of this range, as well as the usual Sudan etc. ::

Yep, I thought the Romans looked a bit titchy and not very inspiring.
The Celts on the other hand look superb... MIght be tempted by those  :wink:

Well... Too small for 28mm....
But, compared to 1/72 soft plastics?
I'm playing DBx games with such minis (for choice and low cost), and announce of plastic historical please me.. if it can be used with my usual 1/72 minis....

I have to say they look a bit MEH The celts look nice but I wonder if they will be the same size? really only fit to go with the old Perry FOundry figures.

I think I will wait and see what else comes out over the next year, would love to see some Elizabethans but doubt that will happen.

Has everyone seen the forthcoming Wargames Factory Celts? 30mm to the top of the head, made to match Cruaader, Artizan, Copplestone etc in height, bulk and style.

It's all a bit sad isn't it. They try and appeal to a wargamer market that uses an existing product which they feel they have a superior version of, in this case the cost of plastic vs metal, then they balls it up by being the wrong size.

If I wanted an army of cheap Romans that didn't match the size of my metal armies I'd buy the existing 20mm plastic stuff that's even cheaper.

Warlord figures are too small and don't have ears, the other Romans and Celts don't exist outside of cyberspace (and they look crap too) and the Perry ACW are too small as well unless you have ancient old ACW figures from rubbish ranges.

What's more, the 'generic' infantry packs have the wrong kit to be Confederates which, if I can notice it, must REALLY piss off the truly anal ACW gamers  that lurk out there.

So far all the plastics have been rubbish which is very, very annoying because they should have been great.

I knew there was a reason I don't do ancients or ACW    but if you want trouble with plastics go to the HaT website and see how long you have to wait before some sets get off the 'in production' list

Hhm, what do mean exactly with "wrong kit"? Besides they are indeed too small to fit in with other ranges, I never realized they could not be used for Confederates.

I always thought that, at least for the early part of the war, before the arse was out of the Reb's trousers, the kit was pretty much the same except for the colour.

At least in part due to the fine example of Sam Colt supplying both sides with his patented weaponry.

Then again, what do I know? Brittains soldiers were the same for both sides, and that's good enough for me.  ::

Happily I'm not one of Matakishi's Anal ACW gang  :: , but I also assumed that they were generally very similar early on and more so later when the CSA captured loads of Union kit. Even if there are some obvious errors, being hard plastic they will be much easier to correct than with metal  

I haven't seen the ACW figures except in photos, but the Perrys Sudan range, whilst being smaller than Redoubt ACW etc, is not too far out, especially if used in separate units  

Does anyone have any comparison pics of Perry, Foundry & Redoubt ACW, before I succumb to the irresistible urge to buy?
