Question about 10mm LOTR
« on: May 10, 2013, 05:00:58 PM »
I was thinking about making a small Mines of Moria skirmish game.  I usually use and like 28mm miniatures.  They would be way too big for a small portable game.  Is 10mm too small?  The coppelstone 10mm minis look great but I'm worried I wont be able to see them ;D  Does anyone else use them?

I have loads of Copplestone not-LOTR, Pendraken fantasy, Old Glory historicals, all for 10mm Middle-Earth. They are great, but it really depends on how you base them and what rules you will use. Do you particular rules in mind? I can recommend Battle of Five Armies aka. Warlord from GW. There's some free army lists for Bofa on the web, for most Ages or Middle-Earth in fact.

If you want to go Skimirsh style, then other rules would work, but I can imagine even Moria could have big battallions, it's just more like urban wargaming and controlling choke points etc.

Thanks for the advice!
I'm not looking for huge battles, just a small portable game.  Do you still think it would work?

Hope these help

Those are brilliant!  Talk about a portable game....I love this idea.

This gentleman over on the BLOOD forum is doing the same with warmaster figures...they look great too.

This topic is a revelation  :o

I never thought that 10mm could be such beautiful. It seems the perfect scale for solo gamer too (cheaper, faster, less room needed).

By the way, is there any pirates range in 10mm scale ?

I made some smaller terrain for Strange Aeons and it really worked for solo gaming.  Building a painting a giant a LOTR army seems exhausting.  I always wanted to try the Mines of Moria.

Thanks for all the replies!

I painted a few for last year's LPL.  All on single bases - penny coins

They are small (especially the Hobbits!) but what do you expect at 10mm?   ::)  Being Copplestone castings though, they are lovely figures.

I recall that Bugsda painted some last year too.

Yes, if you're going for some smaller games with individually based figs, then you could use pretty much any ruleset that caters for such deal. But note that some 10mm minis are based as 'sticks' of five or more men, they're essentially a single mini of multiple guys. So it's not possible (or at least easy) to base them individually. Old Glory and original BOFA minis are like these, for example.

Orctrader, it's really impressive you achieved to put shading and highlights on 5mm hobbits  :o

The thing that attracts me to 10mm is the scale, as you can have a full castle or town (or a castle AND a town) and it'll fit on a table, whereas with 28mm it takes up loads more space. I'm thinking of dipping my toe into this scale soon, as i've onyl really done 28mm yet so a change of scale might be refreshing.

10mm is a great scale both for massed battle and for skirmishing.

And for LotR, Pendraken ranges will have everything you need.

That's some pretty sick painting.  I'll have to find someone to paint those for me.  Hey Orctrader do you use an electron microscope for the eyes?
