« on: May 25, 2013, 05:41:00 PM »
Chaps
i have been asked by a mate to do the Wars of the Roses in metal 28mm

and off the top of my head i know Front Rank do a good range as do

Renagade.  Question whats the best/most complete range out there?

im sure ive missed loads as it not my area ...( the Perry plastics look

inviting.......Capt Blood will know im sure as hes our Towton Sage...

look forward to any feedback ...............also the equipment though i

believe it was many artillery free...apart from a few seiges... 8)

I would say look at the Perry WOTR and European armies ranges.

You have 3 wonderful plastic sets and about 50 metal packs covering personalities, troops, artillery, wagons, clergy and even labourers.

Ged, I'm with Mick.
The Front Rank range has its advocates, but to my eye, they're not a patch on the Perry range.
Even if you want to stick to metals, the Perrys now have enough in their WOTR and European Armies ranges, to assemble a pretty good collection without going near the plastics.
Before Michael Perry did WOTR, the only other range that ever tempted me was the old Copplestone-sculpted range for Grenadier. They had the right feel about them.
But truthfully, I can't really see why anyone would go anywhere else these days, given how stunning the Perry figures are.

(I will put in an honourable mention for the small range of knights from Steel Fist though. They are extremely nice, and very compatible with the Perry range).

A couple of years back I would have said Front Rank, but there is no doubt that the Perrys have the most complete and varied range out there at this time. The versatility of the plastics allows so much variety amongst the rank and file. The metal command packs also look the part too!

Artillery was used in the field from the outset, initially in low numbers and somewhat erratically in terms of its presence, but steadily increased over the years. The quantity of shot recovered from Bosworth Field, which varies between 30mm and 94mm, is the largest quantity ever recovered from a Medieval battlefield, implying that both field guns and handguns were used more commonly than previously thought, at that battle at least.

For the time, the number of sieges was quite low. The armies sought each other out for quick decisive engagements where possible, rather than extended campaigns and sieges, quite the opposite as was usually the case in Europe in the same period.

thanks Richard some sound advice there.................it does seem the

common consensus is drifting heavily towards the Perrys.......i will look

at the other ranges as well. Arlequin i didnt know artillery was that

prevalant.........but then again we all used to hold a very different opinion

on the "Car park King" ...........seems not to have been the total

pantomine villian, as im slowly getting into the period ..the more im

fascinated at the sheer geographiucal spread if the action

seems the Perris have it all sown up on the WOTR front...........and the

best artilelry pieces? which comapny?

Perry have two good field guns WR6, WR7 and a bombard WR 16 which are historically accurate and have good crews.
If you need more guns, you could mix the crews.
http://www.perry-miniatures.com/index.php?cPath=23_34

I also have a Mirliton gun too.  This is from the old Grenadier range
ME018 on this page

Front Rank have a good field gun, similar to Perry WR6
http://www.frontrank.com/lev4_4_4_0_Medieval_Equipment.asp

Foundry also have five types, including a heavy gun on wheels

and the crew are listed in a seperate collection.

Yep. Foot knights in one, and lighter cavalry in the other.
I'm quite depressed really, because although they're going to be fabulous, it means another two rounds of endlessly building, converting and painting WOTR figures!!!  >:(  ;)
