Barbarian/Marauder army / New War Drum
« on: June 08, 2013, 05:03:33 PM »
Thought I would dig out and photograph my barbarians I painted about 10 or 12 years ago.At the time I had been out of gaming for a while, but really liked the then new GW marauders and marauder horsemen.

Basic cavalry figures, or torsos on Kislev horse archer legs. There are a few old bits here as well, top right guy has a head from the first speciality set of Chaos warriors, and some of the horses chest shields are old Minifigs orc shields. I use the Horned God rune a lot on my figures, nicked from Runequest I believe.

These, and the chariot, are great! A group shot of all the Marauders when you are done showing the individuals would be greatly appreciated!

They look really cool. I like both the models and the way you painted them. Top notch!

The subtle use of red has paid off - these miniatures ooze 'barbarian'.

Very nice job.  My friend has these as well.  I really think they strike the perfect balance of of having more skulls and ornamentation than most (they are GW after all) but not being overloaded with such the way current chaos figures seem to be.

One more set of figs to watch for....

I will try and get organised and rename the post Barbarian Army and then start putting pics of the individual units up.... I'm not very good at planning ahead!

Thanks eilif. I did beef them up to make them more skully, and gave them bigger weapons. This was about 10 or 12 years ago before we had the skull overload from GW.

Very impressive!  I can just hear the strains of Basil Poledouris' "Battle of the Mounds" in the background...

Thanks, I had that cd playing on loop while I painted the whole army so it obviously got into the paintwork somehow.

Right, rather than mess the board up with extra posts and pictures I renamed the post and can now stick up some more pics of my hairy Vanir tribe without clogging things up. Thanks for your comments so far, I rally feel like getting back into doing some more barbarians, probably Aesir viking types or some Cimmerians (I use these terms loosely not intending to stick slavishly to the Conan mythology).

More ginger marauders, this unit counted as Chaos Warriors during the few games of Warhammer I played. I really don't like the GW chaos gods and gribbly mutations, so my chaos warping was a bit more subtle, the affected warriors just grow huge :o!

2 from Grenadier, the chap in the background has a modified axe.

A trio of Ral Partha oldies (I like the 2 with horned helmets which remind me of the giants in the Frazetta painting, in fact looking at the guy in the middle, he looks like my father in law)

An Asgard giant, with modified weapon.

And to tidy things up, here are the chariots I had in a seperate post, hope it's ok to post them again for the sake of making the thread complete.

Love the giants, and a great idea to have them count as chaos warriors! =) Just one little question, I'm way behind on my Warhammer-fu... when removing casualties from a unit would one base count as one unit or would a base count as "as many bases it's covering"?

Some great work here in this army.
Whilst they all look great, my personal favourite is the chariot, which I feel is a wonderful centrepiece.

The Lads of the Redheaded League are TERRIFIC LOOKING...GREAT brushwork. The Giants are FANTASTIC...this preference may be in part based on nostalgia. VERY WELL DONE!
