Any Space Orc/Orx alternatives
« on: June 26, 2013, 01:02:50 PM »
Howdy folks, I'm struggling to find Space Orcs I like the look of (non comic/steroidal apes) and wondered if anyone knows so some good options?  I really like the Hasslefree Orc and Goblins heads so if there are some good sci-fi troops that are bulkier than humans and have a merc/cammando feel (without being cheesy) than that would be an option too.
I'll be using these in Warpath (by Mantic Games) and though I like their Orx better than most they still don't do it for me due to the bare feet and the style of the heads.

You might like to check out the Aruk from Black Hat's Cobalt-1 range:

They kind of look like Earthworm Jim, but if you are thinking of swapping heads anyway...

Just a shame they don't have many in the range.

Great Topic!  I've never liked the cartoony look of the games workshop orc/orks and as the recent Deadzone kickstarter seem to show, all the non-GW companies seem to follow suit to ride their coat tails (Mantic, Kromlech, Spellcrow etc).  I too would like to see some space orcs that don't have pot bellies, hunched backs and jutting chins.

On their Facebook page Hasslefree have a picture of the green of a forthcoming SF figure of a humanoid with a gun and this one figure looks perfect for what you want. I loathe the GW style of orcs but I like this figure.

Would head swaps be any use? Though are any of the commercial orc or human figures useable for your needs? The GW plastic Cadians spring to mind as they had fairly exaggerated musculature without looking as if they had been sculpted in the dark like their recent minotaurs. Then if you get bodies you can use who does heads?

I did exactly that for a half ork NPC in a scifi RPG I'm in: Cadian body as a base, bulked out with plasticard, Catachan arms and head of an RTB01 sergeant:

Just substitute the head by one of your choice and you're set...  ;)
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Have you thought about using a complete alternative to Orks but use the same rules?

Beastmen and lizardmen are two ideas that quickly spring to mind as they have a selection of troops from small to large size.

I have seen GW plastic beastmen and Tau parts mixed together quite effectively and also beastmen with Catachan arms.

Also, what about LotR Uruk-hai? I am not sure if they would be big enough though...

I have a similar issue with most of the Orcs available currently.  Especially with the sci-fi ones.  What I really want is something like this in a sci-fi version.  It is bestial, large, competent and serious looking.

I don't have any suggestions, but I am definitely keeping an ye here to see what is brought up.
