Those are WONDERFUL.

I looked at the page at the Tea House; is that wall material corkboard? If so, what thickness do you find ideal...I hate foamcore and am looking for something better. And for us Americans, what kind of "emulsion paint" are you talking about? I'm looking for a better basing material than I currently use, which is lightweight vinyl spackle mixed with pigment.

I use flooring cork, wall cork is not suitable. I buy mine from a wholesaler but packs are available on eBay UK, worth a look on the US site I imagine. The standard tiles I use are 4mm thick, here's a quick introduction:

The household paint I use is Dulux, standard matt wall paint, no idea if Dulux exists as a brand in the US but any household paint will do.

Looked at the Dulux site, UK, and it doesn't note if it's acrylic or latex...they don't make it easy, do they, mate? :)

Thanks so much for your tips. Not sure how I missed that whole section as I'm a frequent reader of the Tea House page for all kinds. Long time admirer, and thanks so much for the help!

Another larger building. This one also replaces an older Conan building I made that I threw away because it was rubbish. I may pause here to paint up my existing Conan scenery that's been waiting a while and then move on in tandem.

I still have some Afghan specific detailing items to make of course.

Absolutely marvellous work. Thanks for the inspiration. I like it all but I especially like the shops and the towers.

Fabulous stuff Matakishi but 5 years in Middle East prompts me to ask

"where is the dust?"

It gets everywhere.

Seconded. The whole set is brilliant, though! :D

The buildings are all dust coloured all over, they're painted the same colour as the ground. The mosque only has dust at the very base, today's dust, because this evening after prayers it will get cleaned again as it is every day. The tower has dust all over but near the top the original colour starts to show where less dust settles.

That's as far as my thinking on dust goes. The awnings are bright because, after all, this is just a model and I want some colour on my table. The trade goods are painted in subdued colours so they don't overpower the figures which are the principle focus of any game but they aren't covered in dust coloured paint because then what's the point? I may as well just dip everything in shit if I want realism that badly.

Each to their own I suppose.

Incidentally, the sand in my basing compound comes from Mogadishu, courtesy of a friend who collected it for me. That's as 'authentic' as I want to get.

that's a good philosophy. maybe not realistic, but greatly effective.
