The Germans recruited an insular guard in the Marianas from both the Chamorro and Carolinian inhabitants. My wife's grandfather was the Sergeant Major of the unit on Saipan (and the only one of his unit that wanted to fight the Japanese in 1914 when they landed). They were uniformed in slouch hats like the German troops in Africa, white shirts with dark chevrons across the front (I have seen pictures with variations between 1 and 3) and dark pants but no footwear.  I can not tell you the colors because all of the photos are black and white but I strongly suspect that they were dark blue.  I have seen a great picture from a 1950s United Nations Day celebration day where the old guys were on parade in their uniforms goosestepping.  When Georg Fritz, the district officer in Saipan, was transferred to Pohnpei  he retained a bodyguard of Carolinean troopers from Saipan that continued to wear the same uniform.

I love this subject. I recently received two books,on the rebellion on Ponape,"Rebellion in der Sudsee",by Thomas Morlang, and a reprint of "Kriegs bilder aus Ponape"von E.Freiherr Spiegel von und zu Peckelsheim, both available thru "Berlinner Zinnfiguren",both in german, second one in the old Gothic script. Both have a scattering of pictures.I have recently ordered a big book from "Namibiana Buchdepot",with 554 pitures of the German southseas colonies.,I am waiting for that one to come in.Also in 28mm,Askari minatures makes great german sailors in Pith helmets,Pulp miniatures makes Polynesian warriors,Tiger makes native policemen.I do read german so most my colonial books are in german I have quite an extensive collection ,.I will let you know on the new book when it comes in.

Alligator,
The Germans bought both the Marianas and the Carolines from Spain in 1899. There were some problems with Spanish and Philippine deportados (exiled prisoners) in the 1870s in the Marianas.  There were also a very few criminal acts but nothing that I could see being gameable.  I am not aware of anything in the Carolines (unlike the Sokehs Rebellion at Pohnepei under the Germans). I will have to check my Hezel (Strangers in Their Own Land)to see if I can find anything that I have forgotten.
