Pulp Rules
« on: July 22, 2013, 02:14:38 PM »
Just looking to get started with the genre and wondering what the best rules to use would be.  I am not sure what I want to play yet but something that could possibly translate to other periods as well.  I am just looking for a fun game with a few miniatures to while away an evening at the club.

Welcome to the group.  ;)

Scroll through the blogs and every time you see the words Pulp Alley or Perilous Island, stop and have a read  ;)

Thanks Prof, I have applied to join the group and look forward to trying some things out.  Out of interest, how many miniatures will make up a group?

As little as a main character, his side kick and two followers. But you can add more if you want. Very flexible outside the rules system  ;)

There written by a member here,..d phipps. I'm sure when he see's your post he'll welcome you also and fill you in on the rules.

The first expansion 'Perilous Island' has just been released.  ;)

Another vote for PULP ALLEY.

Just with the "vanilla" rules, a team can be as small as 3 minis, or as big as 17, but the "normal" size is about 4 to 7 minis.

The question about PULP RULES springs in the forum from time to time. In the appropriate PULP subforum you can find a lot of information, but just to get you started, this is one of the latest, and you can find very useful tips about pulp rules people are playing:

But I'm completly sure you can't go wrong with PULP ALLEY. Is my choice for pretty much ALL my skirmish wargaming now.

Hope that helps.
I know you're too old to play with toy soldiers. So give them to me... NOW!

I own/have played these sets of pulpish rules
-.45 Adventure
-Adventure!
-Hollow Earth Expedition
-Larger Than Life
-Savage Worlds/Thrilling Tales
-Chaos in Cairo
-Dark Continent

my choice is for 45 Adventure, but that dont means it's better than the rest, its the one that better suits my needs.
Because at the end, It's only a matter of personal needs. For instance, I dont play too frequently, so rules focusing a lot on campaigns and progression dont afford me too much apart from the fun to read the book.

I suggest you to look for threads about game reports and read them, from what you see in a report you can feel teased for the system or not.

In my experience the key ingredient to an exciting pulp game session is having a dedicated person running the game who is not playing, and to use any rules which allow a GM-like player to insert events (story) into the gameplay and require players to roll to dictate semi-random outcomes.  (and that person being knowledgeable enough about the rules to speed along complicated encounters by always knowing how many dice to roll, values to hit, any extra rules which are in effect without having to page through the book)

Brigadier '38 and G.A.S.L.I.G.H.T. have worked well though neither are designed as pulp rules per se (very british civil war and victorian science fiction) They are more geared to lots of players (my group plays with 8 players, about 10 figures per unit with 1-2 units and 1-2 heroes for each player )

I've just started playing Pulp Alley and they are very well priced. A good set of rules.

Another question, sorry, but do the rules provide for 'minions'?  For example an entourage of figures that are controlled by a character but are expendable.  Also, looking at other periods and thinking of Victorian Colonial games, would these rules work as well?

Sorry for the daft queries but I'm not too sure what I want apart from a game with some characters and some other lesser types running around playing their part.

Thanks

Pulp Alley is all about the story. You can easily have a League with a Leader, a sidekick and a bunch of "minions". The only required character is the Leader and that can be altered with League perks.

The Character abilities in Pulp Alley are written so that can be applied in variety of ways allowing you to use just about any setting. That's what drew me to Pulp Alley to begin with. I really want to use Pulp Alley for a Star Wars Campaign.

Just so you know, my opinion is not unbiased. I am the Co-writer of Pulp Alley: Perilous Island. But don't just take my word for it, like Prof. Dinglebat said, read the posts about Pulp Alley. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Thanks, I have downloaded the quick start rules and will be giving them a go as soon as I have figured out which figures to use.

I also downloaded the quick start rules to give them a once over. Great service, to offer that up for free. I will definitely be buying the full blown rules...possibly as early as today. I know how I am, though. If I get the rules I'll get wrapped up in them and it may cause me to lose steam on something I really want to finish up first...!

Very kind of you to say so, sir! This was actually a disappointing summer as far as travel goes. Nothing overseas...only Hilton Head, Historicon and Vegas next week. I'd much rather be traipsing some ancient temple or ruins... :'(
