Time Life Wild West book series
« on: July 22, 2013, 10:36:09 PM »
Just a quick post about this old series of books.  Might bring back a few memories for the older folk who reside here :)

While I never had any of those, I remember seeing them in the library at school etc.  What a great resource (though like all historical things I'd be curious to see how the information stacks up against more modern interpretations). So much historical information from my childhood has been called into question.

I don't think they are a scholarly resource :) They were made for the mass market - hundreds of pictures and photos.

Ordered the Canadians for my wife and put a bid in on the Spanish West one.  EvilBay has it's uses.

I remember those. Had most of them when I was growing up. One of my brothers ended up with them though. Lots of really great pictures.

Pretty easy to find at used book stores for a decent price so I'd skip the Ebetray route.  I have several of them and find them useful for inspiration and even some painting ideas.

I was recently given the whole series by my kids great grandmother. She wanted them to be available to them when they were older. Some of the books are probably not going to hold up well under modern scrutiny, but over all they are an excellent basic resource for the Westward expansion of North America. It is refreshing to see that it includes Canadian and Mecican history as well. I am constantly surprised at how quickly people forget that where I live now (Olympia, Washington State) was once part of Canada. Likewise I'm not foolish enough to ignore the fact that many of our words for things western are from Spanish.....

I agree. The couple that I have I was able to find in local used bookstores. I don't think I paid more than $3 or $4 for any of them.

Indeed a splendid series about the West, well researched and full of contemporary photography. Can't see why they should "probably not going to hold up well under modern scrutiny".

Highly recommended!

$4 for the book, $4 for shipping/postage.  My time is valuable to me. $8 covers less than 12 minutes of my time at work.  Used book stores are getting very rare in these parts.

Glenn
