First attempt at buildings... (updated)
« on: 10 May 2008, 03:12:20 PM »
This is a WIP of my first attempt at putting some Gangster buildings together.

They are build to the Matakishi TM design, but use ModelBuilder to produce the textures, windows, etc.

This is just the ground floor of a tenement, with some copplestone gangsters for scale.  The stairs are a bits of scrap balsa and I think I'll redo them as they look a bit crap...

More pictures once I've build some more floors - I'm using Foamboard because I had some but will probably try and get hold of some cork for the next building.

Nice work. You got a great texture on the buildings, and scaled right. The windows even look like they are part of the building, not floating on to, like so many card stock textures do.

As for the stairs, just paint it. Add a few decorations to it. Nobody will notice but you.

Spent some more time in the sun in the garden and I've now almost finished the first building.

I am waiting on some cornices from Litko, and getting hold of some matchsticks to add window ledges and door frames.

Looks great, however the doors might be a bit too small maybe? The textures are excellent. 8)

The door is 7.5 feet high at scale, it looks a bit small because the steps are too high really - I am going to redo the design for those.

Show off, the building looks great. Why not just cut out the section of pavement and drop the steps into them as they look very well done and it would be a shame to chop them up

Yes that is black foamcore.  The stationery shop I got it from sells both black and white, I felt black was better as it doesn't show up as much in the gaps between the printed walls.

Nice work Mike. I'm thinking about a similar project so that's a nice piece of inspiration.

it looks very good so far. You could make the sidewalks a little bit thinner (maybe using cardboard, plasticard or MDF) and then that would reduce the height of the stairs.

looks good ! only thing I see wrong about the stairs is  they have'nt been painted yet . The top level looks a little bare are you going to put a sign or business logo there?

It is still a WIP shot.  I am waiting on some Litko cornices to add to the roof section and, as you say, in that picture the stairs haven't been painted.

Matakishi was kind enough to give me a bag of matchsticks, so I will be adding details such as windowsills.

I've designed my next two buildings - two shops in Modelbuilder but need to sort out my inkjet printer before I can print them out.

I Hope you did'nt take my comments the wrong way I was trying to be helpful not critical! I did know you were'nt finished.
I think you'll be amazed how much 3d elements like the windowsills and cornices change the look of printed bricks or stoneworklooking forward to seing the finished results
