Uniforms of the Retreat from Moscow, 1812, Worth buying?
« on: August 07, 2013, 08:57:48 AM »
Hi all,

A friend of mine has offered me a copy of Uniforms of the Retreat from Moscow, 1812, Philip J. Haythornthwaite which I'm thinking of buying as I plan to do a Retreat from Moscow skirmish demo at some point soon and i was wondering if any of you could let me know how useful it might be?

Darrell.

It's a very solid basic resource for facings colours, etc. Worth having.

I'll offer an enthusiastic second to the recommendation. I have a very well-thumbed 37 year-old copy that I still consult regularly.

Definately worth getting, plenty of uniform info and the plates are superb. I was lucky enough to pick mine up from a second hand bookshop for £3.20

I have been looking for a copy for years. Nostalgia value if nothing else. I would get it. You won't regret it.

I don't know the book. You'll probably also need a book on Russian civilian clothes of this period that could have been stolen in Moscow to wear against the cold, and a book about torn uniforms :D lol

Yep, I'm beginning to realize that  lol.

By the way, do you have any more pics like the one above? If so, i'd love to see them.

Thanks Shaun. There are certainly some usable mini's on their site- I like the idea of the angry peasants, the cart and the wolves. Of course the dead and wounded will come in handy if Alan doesn't get around to doing some.

Guys the book arrived and to my eyes at least there are a lot of uniforms to absorb and a few very nice pics of the French retreating.

Should be a great start   .

So you have some pics of what they looked like… ::)

You could also ask "Cuprum" who often posts in the LAF BoB section, he knows many Russian sources. I think I had seen another painting in a Moscow museum.

French sources, and later descriptions (sometimes exagerated) describe soldiers covered with civilian coats, pelisses, women's scarves and fur collars, etc.

Ooooh beware or you'll end up with "a frozen starving beggar band" instead of an army, as in the song. lol

Thanks Carl,

Do you know if the book has many drawings in colour specific to the Retreat from Moscow??
