12-14th Century Knights
« on: August 07, 2013, 10:48:52 PM »
I am looking for some 28mm "heroic scale" medieval minis of knights and/or general fighters on foot wearing incomplete plate armor and a coat-of-plates, and preferably with a gambison showing through.  Something like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/69126220@N08/9457673321/in/set-72157634974677764

I am looking for pig-face and hound-face helmets.

The Perry WotR minis are very nice, almost perfect, but a little too small for what I am seeking.  The Fireforge men-at-arms are really good but no plates and no coat-of-plates over the gambisons.

There *must* be something big and beefy like Fireforge (or bigger) and with plates like Perrys' WotR minis, right?

Any suggestions?

I'm no expert on armor helmet types...but have you looked at claymore
Casting offerings?  It seems they would fit to me.

Good luck...let us know what you decide on.

Be warned, though, Claymore Casting models match the size of the Perries' figs for the Hundred Years War, i.e. they aren't "heroic scale" either.
You could try Kingmaker/1st Corps as they are at least a bit chunkier – somewhat more along the lines of Front Rank.

During the period of the 12-14th Century there were tremendous developments in armour.

As far as Claymore Castings are concerned their knights are great for the end of the 14thC (about 1469-1415 at a pinch). The foot soldiers have a bit more leeway and many could be used twenty years earlier and a little after 1415.

If you're a bit more specific about the period you're looking for I can be of a lot more help.

Darrell.

Front ranks and kingmaker might have the ones you're looking for. Right sort of period/look with the helms you're looking for.

The Perry Agincourt range might work too but they're not 'heroic' scale.

Exactly like this: http://minimumwagehistorian.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/13th-c-knights-mean.jpg

Pig-face visors on bascinets, coat-of-plates not full-plate, arms and legs with plate, some chain and/or pads showing (nice texture  ;) ).

Thanks for the advice, folks!

Well, I can tell you by looking at the pic that they they're not 13th Century knights! They are much more in key with what many knights/men at arms would have been wearing around the time of Battle of Crecy (1346).

There are a few options. you could go for the Bretonnians that the Perry's designed many moons ago, some of which are still manufactured by Wargames Foundry (though they are not what I would deem to be 'herioc' in scale:

Codes: Med 202 & 201
http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/our-ranges/medieval/hundred-years-war/medieval-infantry-collection-bcmed002/

Then there is Front Rank who presently manufacture the largest Medieval miniatures for the time period you have pictured in your link:

In particular look at codes HW40-45, though most of the range is do-able for the early HYW:
http://www.frontrank.com/lev4_4_1_1_HYW_Infantry.asp?show=all

The company that Iwould go for (though definately not 'herioc' in scale is Claymore Castings as they rpoduce some very fine miniatures that would fit nicely:

http://claymorecastings.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=20&product_id=100
http://claymorecastings.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=20_43&product_id=90
http://claymorecastings.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=20&product_id=101
http://claymorecastings.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=20&product_id=102
http://claymorecastings.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=20&product_id=103

to give you some idea of a comparison here's a pic of a vignette I painted a while back for Agincourt that shows the Front Rank Henry V next to the Perry Miniatures Sir John Codrington et al:

Yep, all freehand on the surcoat.

Thanks for the compliment  :).

Was the info any use to you? If not feel free to ask anything you want.

That really is some awesome free hand work!!  :-* :-*

I like to think I'm pretty good at painting, but I'm not skilled enough to paint on that sort of detail I'm sad to say.

1st Corp are lovely figures - sculpting and poses are absolutely spot-on. However, based on the ones I have they are nearer "true" 25mm than anything heroic. The ones I have are all from the 30 Years War ranges, and they match with the Perry metal ECW minis a lot better than with Warlord/Redoubt/Renegade (i.e. the biggies).

I've seen their other ranges at shows, and I think they are all similarly scaled. I might be wrong but it might be worth keeping in mind.
Measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with an axe, hammer to fit, paint to match!

Atheling, you're a-okay, don't worry about highjacking the thread, pal.

Besides, with your examples, I may see something along the lines of what I am seeking.

The reason for this request is to get some knights who look like the armor I wore at a fair two weeks ago.  I had never done this before but the guys who were competing were short a few people so my friends asked me to give it a try.

I suited up in 80 pounds of steel, they gave me a tiny little buckler and a mace that was ridiculously tiny and said GO!  (My wife told me, in front of everyone, "come back with your shield or on it.")

The first guy had a 2-handed axe and managed to knock the faceplate right off the pig-faced steel helmet I was wearing.  I have been in gentler car accidents....  Anyway, I made it through 3 fights.  My kids were proud.  My head is still ringing.

I figured some minis to commemorate this would be in order.  :D  I have some Perry's and, while very nice, aren't quite what I am looking for.
