An oldhammer YouTube channel called Crown of Command has a series of podcasts where people are asked to talk about their favourite old White Dwarf issue. And after commenting on an episode, the channel's creator reached out to me asking if wanted to do an episode myself.

I agreed, and the result was an 80 minute monologue detailing my very first White Dwarf; issue 145. He managed to edit this down to a more audience friendly 30 minutes, and it's up for listening now. I even managed to mention the LAF in there ;)

And even though I'm more of a music while I paint kind of hobbyist, I know there are many who like to listen to podcasts while they paint, so perhaps this is of interest to some of you :)

It can be found on YouTube, where the discussed pages are displayed as they are talked about, and will also be released on Spotify shortly.

Here are the links:

So many memories from back then! I think I might have been just after that for my first issue, but over time I ended up collecting all the way back to the beginning. Long sold now.

My favourite was probably the Orke’s Drift fight! The XXIV vs a newer darker painted Ork army - it just got all my creativity moving. Classic.

This weekend is the pre-order for the Emperor’s Children- and I’m going to grab some. Thexy pink marinesth? Yeth, pleathe! 💗

Fun to listen to the episode Daeothar, thanks for posting it.
a mixture of quick parts, sarcastic humour, reserve, and caprice.

That army looks quite cool too. A few years ago I would have said the models were overly complicated but they are rather subdued (in a good way) for Games Workshop Warhammer

As I just replied in another thread:

I suppose they do look the part, but I'm not convinced by the paintjobs. IMHO they should have gone with a red and gold theme, but that may just be me. Perhaps that's my lack of contact with Chinese culture outside of take-away restaurants ::)

Because it does seem they've gone with a mostly (completely?) Chinese influence, while there are quite a few very old miniatures in the fantasy line that hint at a more Japanese inspiration (Hoshi Komi in Bloodbowl for instance), so hopefully they will delve into that direction as well for future releases.

But then there's also Cambodian, Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, Korean and Mongolian sources, to name a few. They might have been better off taking a page out of GCT Studio's Bushido playbook. That setting cleverly combines all matter of Asian influences into a single fantasy setting without making them look out of place...

The cathay stuff is gorgeous - the balloon, cannons and dragons are real stand outs of the whole reveal.

Tyranids vs servitors seems a bit...meh? There had been a general hope that the next box would be tyranids vs catachans so more ad mech is a bit of an anti climax.

The only thing that really threw me off was the thousand sons robots - they almost don't look like 40k miniatures.

They remind me (obviously I'd say) of the Khemri Ushabti, of which they are undoubtedly the 40K equivalent. Also; Stargate Goa'uld Guards...

Biggest thing for me in the whole preview is Mordheim centigor being released for Old World beastmen. Since dropping Mordheim this is the first time GW brings any miniature back from that range, no MTO's have ever included any, I believe?
Perhaps there will be more Mordheim stuff reappearing in the future, I surely hope so.

Good spot. I must admit with the 'Empire in civil war' timeline I'd hoped they might have released some of the Mordheim Reiklanders/Middenheimers/Marienburgers/etc as 'flavor figures' to help give the armies some more provincial flavour
