Winter terrain board - help needed!
« on: September 15, 2013, 07:16:54 AM »
I just signed up for the Winter War kickstarter (amazing value, you get more stretch goal miniatures than the number you pledge for  ;D ) so I need to start planning my terrain. I was thinking to do a winter terrain that could be used both for WW2 and 1812 Napoleonics. I would be most grateful for any ideas, comments or advice on layouts for a 100 x 75 cm skirmish board. Thanks!

I'd go for a sleepy russian/finnish village. Just some rounded hills (remember, the whole landscape was shaped by glaciers during the last ice age) and some birch trees as well as some softwoods (I guess Russian larch, Scots pine and Norway spruce would be the most common). Don't make the trees to big the cold climate would keep them rather small (so you can easily steal H0 railway trees).
Far less active than I used to...

Hi Traveller

With the Winter War KS having funded it'll be great to see a lot more winter boards!

As Steve had already mentioned, I'm pushing winter boards for my own project and one of the first things to resolve was how to do the snow.

There's this related to SSS:

I'm doing a couple of terrain sets, a more complex urban construct that is on tiles, and a very simple rural set for Dead Snow type games. There's more about the last one here:

I am rather in the same boat with this one, has everyone had a secret longing to do the Winter War?

The only winter terrain I ever made were a couple of stands of conifers, as a test one was winterised with white textured paint and the other with marble dust. The textured paint won on all counts being easier to get, easier and quicker to apply and looked much better and not looking like something you could be arrested for possession of.

There was an article in Wargames Illustrated many years ago that suggested using melted candle wax to do frozen water. At the time it seemed a great idea now I am not so sure.

Silent Invader,

you have some great concepts there, many thanks!

Glitzer,

a sleepy village sounds like a good idea since it could fit the Napoleonic area as well. Maybe I should do an interchangable part of the board with snow trenches as well  ??? images from "The Winter War - Talvisota" spring to mind...
