WWI naval rules
« on: 19 September 2013, 04:59:27 AM »
Can anyone recommend an easy to play WWI fleet set of rules, that is good fun, fast play and doesn't require a degree in astrophysics to understand. Fleets of about 12-15 ships, and playable in a couple of hours. Scale not important, but it should be able to be played on an 8x6 table.

Thanks

Victory at Sea - Age of Dreadnoughts by Mongoose works great. Fun and simple. Just enough detail. More in the Great War than in the WW2 thanks to that gifted naval rules fellow David Manley.

Clash of Dreadnoughts has served us well - our group found Naval Thunder too 'cinematic', with ships thunderously exploding more often than we felt was quite right. "Insta-kills" should be quite rare - not a "twice or three times an evening" event.

Another vote for Naval Thunder, my criteria was the same as yours plus it had be easy to teach and keep casual gamers and rivet counters happy... :)

Naval Thunder - I've got a game on tomorrow (sun)!

We have a fictional Predreadnought campaign and after much shenanigans in the Med, the actions shifted to the South China Sea where the French and Japanese are about to trade blows. The question is which of her allies will Great Britain support!

I'd also like to recommend Naval Thunder - Clash of Dreadnoughts. We've done multiple different games with them, and they're always a blast.
