Thanks gents.

Per rumacara's suggestion up above, I bought a couple of packs of the Peter Pig 15mm light guns (6 to a pack) - and they're a perfect fit with the 10mm Pendraken figures (in reality they're about 12mm). Thanks Rui :)

So I now have pirate gun crews with three different styles of gun, L-to-R below: The Peter Pig 15mm light ship's gun, the 10mm Pendraken 9pdr. fortress gun, and the Silent Invader home sculpted and cast gun. Which makes up in simplicity and charm what it lacks in detail compared to the other two. Thanks Steve :)

I mean, honestly, from more than about 9 inches away in this miniscule scale, you won't really be able to see much detail anyway - although hopefully these bases will be identifiable as artillery from a little further away than that at tabletop distance  lol

They look great, and all the better for the variety of gun.

A very fine set of artillery pieces. Beware of those who get too close!   ;)

At the plant nursery this morning and saw bougainvillea and thought of this thread:

Note the small white flowers, the actual flowers.  The pink bits are bracts.

Of course, I know this from my deep botanical knowledge - or maybe I looked it up recently and discovered it!  :D

Sometimes a bit lighter pink maybe.

good stuff from this shop; my first stop for tufts etc, for some yrs now (the 'fuchsia bushes' being a favourite).

not sure they do anything right for Bougainvillea, but the 'strong pink' shade they offer looks fairly close in terms of colour.

Thanks Leon 8)

Next terrain board is done...

It's basically the same process as the Puerto Caramba board, only a bit more straighforward...

A couple of shallow desert islands carved from 10mm blue styrofoam with the hot wire cutter and then sanded down...

Seal the whole thing with a couple of coats of neat PVA, then once dry, apply PVA and sand to just the islands...

Spray with primer (this is why you PVA the entire slab, sides and all, otherwise the spraypaint will melt holes in the styrofoam... ) This fixes any loose sand on the islands.

Paint the islands with a sand colour, drybrush with a lighter sand colour, then give them an ultra thinned oil wash of burnt umber, to pick out some of the surface texture a bit more...

Paint in the sea, varying the shades slightly to show more sandy banks near the shoreline, and wet blending in a few stippled darker patches to suggest weed or rocks beneath the surface.

Three coats of high gloss yacht varnish to pick up the infinitesimally dimpled surface of the main styrofoam slab, suggesting wind rippling the surface of the water...

Add a few scattered tufts and some scrub on the inland centres of the islands - keeping vegetation away from the beach. Then spike in some palm trees.

And there you have it... 10mm pirate heaven lol (Or haven perhaps).

Burying the treasure - yarrrr! ;)

Nice board - with nice islands.  And clearly it is high tide.

Hot and sticky?  Well, we here in California, for the moment at least, are getting a bit of a break.  Which may seem strange when I say upper 80s to mid-90s F, but this time of year it can regularly be over 100 F.  We've had a wonderfully mild spring and summer is off to a decent start.  Not all roses, very low humidity and north winds and dry fuel mean high fire danger.  So far, so good.

On the tail end of a massive sort of the last few years of acquiring 3D buildings and terrain bits and put all the pirate stuff together.  And assembled all the flora stuff for making jungles (and kopjes for Africa, too).  If all holds steady, will have much more time to focus on hobby projects for the latter half of the year.  Until the wife gets some idea in her head!  :o. Pirates is in the mix fighting for, probably, second position.
