Re: Fallout: Heading East - Modular Shacks Pondery

@ Papa Spanky

You say buildings aren't usually larger than a person can reach ...but I have at least two shacks that are larger than 5'' tall, and one close to 8'' I think. Whoever has the tallest shack in down clearly is the top dog of course. ^^

So as long as a model doesn't need to be standing right in the middle of a door having them realistically sized is fine right? I mean it would be possible to stick at least part of a curved base into a door, so I'll assume that in every other case models won't be stopping right inside a doorway.

Right now the intended pieces are:
The bulk of the pieces:

1''x1'' squares

1''x0.5'' rectangles

Ocassional pieces which allow for more varied detail (ie windows, doors, angled corrugated sheets/whatever):

2''x2''  squares

2''x1'' rectangles

At this stage I probably won't make 0.5'' tall pieces above the 1'' size.

Smaller 0.25'' pieces may be an option, but its finding a use for them and seeing if their castable (which they ought to be). Mind I'm laying out all these pieces without having attempted any test casts yet (I'm just assuming based on past experience that certain things will work or won't).

With the change to smaller pieces and removal of the inserts I was using previously (who wants holes and bits jutting out of the middle of a wall?) I may elect to do what I do with Hirst Arts Molds to give them more integrity. As they don't have anything to attach to other than just glueing two pieces to one another's side I typically attach them to a thin piece of backing card. Based on how my pieces are designed (I'll see later in the week) I may suggest that others do the same just for ease of building, though it would be entirely optional (I just find it makes my life easier when arranging all the little squares).

Possible add on pieces:

* Stairs.
* Triangular bits for angled roofs.
* Roof supports for raised ceilings (ie like a guard tower. A maybe, as the supports may be prone to snapping in the mail. People could just use lengths of balsa wood for this purpose)
* Chimney Roof/Wall pieces (not at this stage as they'd require molds that weren't flat like every other piece and I'm trying to keep things simple)
* Overhangs for doors/windows/just to hang off of walls to cover things (wouldn't be hard to do, but they could have supports, which I refer you to the roof supports for)

And other things... With a kit like the one I have planned I'd be using that as a basis for my own additions. As in say I'd want the building to be raised above the ground. I'd just stick on a few cinder blocks or a rim with a different texture to the bottom and some stairs. Those bits wouldn't be hard to make, but would others prefer if those bits were available along with the rest of these pieces for ease?

Heh, and mind, this is still all theoretical. I could put all this together and find that logistically or economically its a nightmare. ;)

I'll see about having something to show by the end of the week. I have a deadline to meet that I'm behind on (blame the toy soldiers), so I really can't waste time working on this right now (which I have been; silly boy). =/

hold on while I wipe the drool from my face... you have some really awesome stuff in this thread! quite awe inspiring to say the least. I've been working on my own fallout army to use in my wargame/rpg biosyndrome.

And to be honest, most gaming will require people to be either 'inside' or 'outside'. You cannot really end your turn on impassible terrain.. or place your model in situations to make rules/cover saves more confusing.

Therefore, the doors don't need to be base sized, and if you want to open/close them that is more for aesthetic purposes. :D That should make things a little easier for you. Id go either sliding doors, or have a modelled closed door with a window or something in it. You will need to have removable roofs to enable internal gaming anyway.

Good luck.
Matt

The top dog in a shanty town is probably some warlord who had slaves build his two story house anyway!
Yeah stick with realistically sized doors. If you check my blog I have a building with an openable base fitting rear door and several others that are either plasticville or correct proportion doors and the difference is... noticable.

Doors that can be open are only any good for aesthetics. You either want to be outside or behind them so there's no point straddling the mid-way point!

Oh I wish I had more people to play it with me. ._.
If you'd like an apocalyptic monster in 28mm, throw me a PM and I'll think it over.

When sorting out my book shelves I sifted through the stack of vehicle kits that sit beneath them. There was a pair of Tamiya BA-64s unbuilt there (I love the design), so I supposed that the Chinese Remnants could do with another something zippy to go along with their patrols. For something different though I swapped out the LMG for a flamethrower. Conversely I also had a bunch of stowage to hand, so on that went as well. I suppose that the flamethrower has enough range on it not to set fire to the armour car itself ...hopefully.

Just a WIP shot of the vehicle for now. I've given it a lick of paint since then, but I still need to finish it off (emulating the paint scheme on my other BA-64's not working out). I'm thinking of calling it the Snapper, because well its not quite large enough to be called something like the "Dragon", nah, that'd be for a tank. Just a little snapper instead. =P

So the shacks have been set aside for a bit whilst I paint up this thing and maybe a few other bits. I prefer to have a bit of variety in what I'm making youknow. *Total modelling ADD

That's me completed my deadline on the current stage of my course work. The next one's a month (or something) away, so I should have a bit more free time now. ...Ignoring all the other course work that needs done that is.

Exactly. XD

Perhaps one day I'll travel to a far away land where models are hard to come by (Australia). In those days the silly number of dollies I have left to paint may actually be finished...

Oh, I had a look through Lead Adventure's catalogue  there for a bit. There was a stall that stocks their full range (as far as I could see) at one of the shows I went to last year, so hopefully I can see about finding it again this time around.  These did catch my eye though. Lobotomite heads perhaps?

Most of these have been sitting about my painting table for a few weeks now. I've not had the time lately to paint anything, but I felt I should hash something out to post.

Chinese Remnants
Snapper(Tamiya 1/48 BA-64b)

The crappily painted Chinese (simplified) characters say: "(The) Red Dragon Rises" -uh, a quote from America Dad.

New Californian Republic
Scout Car (Dinky Daimler Armoured Car)

Something to follow patrols about as they dispense some frontier justice perhaps? Armoured Cars suit skirmish games more than their larger cousins ...and are much quicker to paint. I actually prefer them to tanks in terms of modelling them. The old British gear seems to fit into my idea of what the regular NCR military would be equipped with. I mean not canonically of course (hell how much of the stuff I make here fits into the base, non speculative canon?), rather just stylistically. But how many retro futuristic, boxy scout cars are being manufactured in 28mm scale? ;)

On this one the characters read: "Suck it Caesar!". ;)

Wastelanders
Caravan Truck
Have a pair of blurry pics (woops).

A Russian Ural-375D I think,. Ah anyway, a vehicle for use as just a bit of terrain or some sort of scenario around a caravan. The driver's cab has been reinforced, though unfortunately the rear section is just as is. It wouldn't take much for a raider to hop on the back and start knicking the wares. I probably should have finished working on this one before I painted it (I think there was plans for a plow at the front), but I guess I still have plenty of other toy trucks (albeit of a lower quality) chucking about. This thing's been sitting on my desk for a month now, and I couldn't really be bothered finishing it.

A set of ramshackle fencing that were made to go along with some allotments that I made. Oi fences are awesome!

And an unfinished WIP of another type of car barricade just to show where that pile of Russian cars are going. Youknow, just for a bit more variety. This style I guess would also look less out of place as a standalone piece, rather than as part of a wall.

Those spare wheels from all those cars I bought are also now seeing use as little barricades too. They could also be used as just clutter to go along the sides of buildings perhaps.

Oh, the Brahmin also now has two heads. Still a massive WIP though. ^^

Right. I now have two weeks off college. My deadlines are further off now, so I can see about actually painting stuff. I'd love to start on the robots and Enclave, but distracting myself with other crap's probably going to be an inevitability. ...Pity I keep buying in more bits (the Enclave are currently sitting at the same strength as the NCR, the largest painted faction. Sure barely any of them are actually painted though). I do want to work on more terrain as well. I mean I have plenty of models, but filling out a board with new scenery always seems to please guys at my club. Hmn, next game I may go for a desert board set around a farmstead and a road or something (hey there's a use for those Brahmin).

An Enclave Trooper in Combat Armour (I have another lot in more advanced looking sets) that I was using to test out a paint scheme. Secrets of the Third Reich mini I guess.

I have a few bits and pieces that I could've finished, but I decided to replay Shadowrun Return's main campaign instead. ...Shame that excuse doesn't work in other areas of my life.

Wastelanders
Wasteland Knight

After finding the remains of a rusting suit of knight's armour, Mick Mundle, a deprived shish kabob salesmen from the Angel's Boneyard, decided to become the people's hero. Naming himself after an ill popular children's snack bar Mundle became Ser Jeremy the Chivalrous (pronounced with a "c"like Chib). Now he wanders the wastes randomly encountering vagabonds and heroes in his odd quest, whilst speaking in his most authentic (cliché) interpretation of the medieval English language (or at least what he could glean from a charred copy of A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court).

The source model's probably twenty odd years old. I found it in a toolbox full of ancient roleplaying models. Gas mask's from Maxi Mini and the riot shield and fuel tank were made some Post Apocalyptic Romans, the maker of which I can't remember the name of.

Ok, I'll need to see about taking a hammer to some cars now. I want some more barricades. *Anyone looking for classic Soviet cars from the 70s is allowed to cry a little now FYI.

do show some more pics (different angles) of this guy. I'd love to create a shishkebab myself one day.

Lovely colours, beings the little guy out nicely. c:

Zizi, the world needs more shishkebabs. I stuck one on one of my raiders, now I'm wondering how it'd look on a super mutant! C:

@zizi666

Great, just after I put my camera away...

I didn't put much work into that thing. Its just a length of plasticard attached to a shorter, thicker piece. Those are then stuck on a round piece (which is the aerial piece from the fuel tank he's wearing). I should have made a proper motorcycle tank, but I had those oxygen ones to hand.

@Messyart

Ah, but with a Super Mutant you'll be looking for a "Skewer" instead. ;)

Last night's progress:

Tribal Totems. The banners in the back are from an old Games Workshop Goblin kit. The other pieces came from the same manufacturer of the Post Apocalyptic Roman bits off the Knight. Just little bits of tat to clutter a board up with.

Not an amazing piece of cover, but I suppose it denies line of sight. ...Presumably someone had the foresight to drain the tank before that thing was shot up.

A McDonald's toy based on the movie cars. I picked this up at a market, but I could've sworn I had a couple of these when they originally came out too (my baby cousin probably has them now). That lead based paint certainly holds up doesn't it? ^^

This thing's going to be a bugger to paint. I have another two skips to put together along with this one (bought for £1 each as part of a truck kit, but hell that's cheaper than Ainsty).

There's a shack that needs finishing that I'd like to work on tonight. I gave it a base coat and filled in the primary colours, but couldn't be bothered to finish it at the time. After that I'll see about sifting out more unpainted terrain I suppose (or just be an arse and make more).

* Edit. Crap I forgot to add any static grass to that terrain. Feck, now to sift out those bits from my terrain box. I just tidied the bloody thing. ¬¬
