Here's my initial attempt at setting up to take photos. Just a bit of blue paper on my painting table and a couple of cheap lamps with daylight compact flourescent bulbs in on each side and my painting lamp overhead.

And the results, first attempt. The camera is a now dated 3.2MP Canon SureShot A75. No tripod or adjustments to the camera settings, just on auto with macro. Basic correction.

Those look pretty good and illustrate how this does NOT require a lot of hi tech equipment.  Well done.  I might suggest a slightly darker background.... Just for contrast.

Cheers,

Thanks, yes I need to experiment with backgrounds, settings etc. I don't even know what resolution the camera was set on but it probably wasn't the maximum.

I did up a batch of simple colour gradient backgrounds over the years, then complied them together into a single PDF last year and put it up on my website. I know I've linked to it before from elsewhere on LAF, but here it is on this photography thread:

http://www.warbard.ca/2011/01/11/gradient-backgrounds-for-photography/

It's a basic 9 page PDF with 8 different full-page gradients. Designed for Letter-sized paper but should scale just fine onto any size paper you can print onto.
