Cthonian

Flowing tentacles and pulpy gray-black, elongated sack of a body...no distinguishing features at all other than the reaching, groping tentacles. Or was there—yes—a lump in the upper body of the thing...a container of sorts for the brain, basal ganglia, or whichever diseased organ governed this horror's loathsome life!
—Brian Lumley, The Burrowers Beneath

This is one of the Achtung! Cthulhu kickstarter Cthonian models. It comes with far too many tentacles, so I've got about 4 spare for other conversions later.
He came out a bit brighter than I'd originally envisaged, but you can just imagine that you're viewing it through a haze of madness, or LSD... or something... ;)

Strangely you're not the first person to mention it giving the finger

LPC 59: Tcho-Tcho Priest

I can't believe I have to reduce myself to quoting Derleth:

"On the contrary, they were a horde of little men, the tallest of them no more than four feet, with singularly small eyes set deep in dome-like, hairless heads. These queer attackers fell upon the party and had killed men and animals with their bright swords almost before our men could extract their weapons."

That's a 50mm base...he's over 70mm from bottom of his feet to the top of his back spine...

Beautiful stuff gents! Great job on this Tcho-Tcho Lidless! Possibly my favorite ever done...again, by Mr. Murch, if memory serves.

I just finished a mini (base drying atm), and have to figure out which one to paint next.

  • Would degenerates/inbreds be a too simple minded solution?
  • Are werewolves part of the mythos canon?
  • Would hybrids be considered fishy?
  • Given the rules, painting a maniac would probably just be crazy?

I need inputs, folks, please!
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

Are werewolves part of the mythos canon?

I would posit that there is no such thing as mythos canon. Lovecraft didn't invent a mythos or establish a universe or a canon, he just wrote a bunch of stories. August Derleth is the one who invented the thing gamers think of as Lovecraft's mythos, and then various gaming products codified it and set its boundaries. For me it would all depend on how the werewolves were handled in a tale as to whether they were "Lovecraftian" or not. For instance the Werewolves in Twilight would not count, but a tale of a degenerate, but once-noble family brought low by an ancient curse, in which the protagonist discovers his taint and is sent mad by it definitely would.  :)

(Incidentally, the first RPG scenario I ever GMed was a game of Call of Cthulhu: it was out of the back of the rulebook, and involved a pack of werewolves and no 'mythos' elements whatsoever. So if Chaosium thought Werewolves were allowed in their mythos game, who am I to argue?)

I very much like the way you have explained this.

I finished painting another Giant Vermin today (with black fur), but I don't think I should enter it (a bit boring with two of those).

Instead, you can go take a peek at http://argonor-wargames.blogspot.dk/ , if you'd like to see it. I had to get it done right away, as it is a planned part of my Cult de Ghouls.

Now I have to decide, what to do next...  :?

I guess I'll have to 'officially' answer Argonor's questions as best I can...and please, anyone feel free to chime in on this. So, in the spirit of this very fine Gentleman's painting showcase I shall decree:

Degenerates or inbred guys are essentially human and not monsters...possibly you could make a better argument if they are mutated? Tentacled? Generally a bit 'not human'...but still not really the game. Monsters, monsters, monsters!

Werewolves are for sure allowed...although a trifle common I'd have said.  ;) Old Lovie himself wrote a poem about one...Psychopompus? Something like that...

Hybrids are fishy...yes? I think yes is the answer to this.  :)

Maniacs are human...now if he had tentacles...

Hope this helps!

OK, I have to paint up a couple of degenerates/inbreds to finish my Cult de Ghouls (as I planned it), but they have no weird mutations (apart from their general appearance, I'm using some old West Wind minis), so I'll have to postpone working on another entry until they are finished.

Let's see if I make it in time...  ::)

LPC 60: Deep One

A Reaper Bones figure I will use as a large Deep One... still some base work to do.

I got rid of the sword in right hand, and added a bit of chain I sculpted from GS. In retrospect I should have just used some real chain. I would like to add a small anchor to the end of the chain, may have to do it after I base the fig.
