Reviving my interest in GW LOTR
« on: February 09, 2014, 09:03:01 PM »
I recently sold off quite a lot of LOTR figures, but at the same time am getting interested in this game again.
This may seem perverse, but there is method in my madness, as the reduction has brought my overblown collection back to the point where the game is at its strongest; the original concept of small skirmishes.
I felt that the game was getting a bit out of control, with too many evil heroes and gimmicky troop types, and I didn't want to make the jump to the big battle version GW introduced.
I always found the northern part of Middle Earth to be more interesting, perhaps because of the novelty, as the north is the first region you read about, and as it seems wilder and stranger, and less dominated by humans.
So the pruned-down collection is dominated by the peoples of Eriador; dwarves, elves, Rangers, goblins, orcs. With not TOO many of each. Well, actually quite a lot of orcs, but even for skirmishes you need some "cannon fodder".
And as my oldest figures were painted in my Humbrol enamels days [HORRORS!] I can spend some time tarting them up without spending money! It's nice to rediscover some older stuff, especially when it includes an untouched plastic Fellowship sprue from the Moria box.
I'm out of touch with developments in this game, and have found the current prices too terrifying for me to cough up for the Hobbit ranges. Is there still life in the original LOTR SBG?

Of course, if a couple of you have the old rules and figures, what does it matter if the game has evolved?  8)

I don't see why not. My collection has just been dragged out of storage thanks to jimbibbly, malamute and others thread.  :)
It consists mainly of figures for the battle if the ford, but it was always the campaign of Rohan against the raiding orcs before Saruman finally showed his hand that interested me. Therefore the forces are fairly small, especially by comparison to the latest incarnation of the battle rules.
One or two heroes with about 15-20 figures a side. Enough for a story based game.  :D

And with the plastic paint stripping method - http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=63213.0 - even nastily painted old plastics can be picked up dirt cheap on eBay and then recycled.

I really liked the LOTR models from GW (at least the ones from the movies) and thought the plastics were really nicely done.

Oddly enough I dragged all my unpainted stuff out into the light today; with a view to looking at it all wistfully and then putting it away again, I suppose, as that's what I ended up doing. :)

I had the partwork magazine version of the game (one of very few modelling partworks that worked out good value for money - the magazine was usually cheaper than the free figure on the cover would have been if you had bought it from GW).

There were lots of good scenarios in the mag that didn't use many figures (there had to be, considering at most you got one plastic sprue's worth of figs or a single metal figure with each issue).

I am heading down the LotR route again. I have been painting Rohan and Easterlings recently, and will get back to painting them again as soon as I get the time (and light). I have enough painted for some small skirmishes now, but I am thinking of starting with the Battle Companies rules and building up a few units that way before playing some 250-500 point battles.

From the mad bidding I have seen on EBay recenty, I think there are a lot of people collecting the models still. As to whether they are playing or not I cannot hazard a guess, but I just have a feeling that many players have dusted off their sets as The Hobbit movies were released.

I have joined the LotR party rather late. (thanks to Jim Bibbly I was persuaded to buy a painted Orc horde on EBay last year.)
We have recently resurrected the project and I have added to the Orcs with some Uruk Hai and some personalities. Jimbibbly and Dr De'Ath are currently building forces for Rohan and Gondor.
We're aiming for skirmish level games with a character or two and a couple of units per side.'I am hoping we can do some linked scenarios and do some sort of a campaign using the GW rules.

I dug out my GW LotR box yesterday. I have fucking *oodles* of the stuff and can probably field (had I the time to paint them) +50 riders of Rohan and +100 orcs and about as many goblins and uruk-hai.

Problem is, now that I look at the rules and my collection I'd prefer to field a Harad army, of which I have none...

Only one solution, Hammers: buy an army!

Seriously, I think the LotR and Hobbit models are among the nicest GW has created lately (meaning in the last 20 years). And though my Ithilien campaign hasn't resurfaced yet it will in time be back.

I can honestly say that a well done LotR/Hobbit campaign is really a wonderful Thing both to work on and to admire if presented by others. So get busy, People and post LOTS of pics....  :)

Lars, yours was the project that inspired me to take the plunge last year (That and Bibbles nagging ;))
