My daughter was home sick last week and put the trilogoy in the DVD player. The extended releases. I got nothing done for the 2+ hours Rohan was on the screen.  :o

We are pretty committed to "our" version of orcs on the tabletop, but watching the Helm's Deep siege had me itching for some large scale battles. I love following the work others do on LoTR games.

Doomhippie- looking forward to more of your LoTR work too.

I have recently started collecting and playing Lotr. The rulebook from the original game is almost identical to the Hobbit rules, the latter has a few extras which, to be honest, bog it down a little. We have stuck with the older version rules.

There are still a few bargains to be had on ebay, especially in the more common plastics (Rohan and Mordor orcs), but the metals have shot up in price recently so you may have to dig deep if you want certain figures. It is a shame, but with no GW support, they are effectively oop and thus only going to get even more expensive.

Another thing you might want to look into is Saga. There are a few Lotr Saga boards knocking about on tinterweb. They offer a decent alternative to the official Lotr rules and play nice and fast - especially suited to those times when you don't fancy resolving 80 odd indivdual orc combats! I personally find Lotr good with up to about 30 figures per side, more than this and Saga is better suited.

Have fun.  :)

Looking forward in seeing the pictures! I have started with wargaming through the Gw lotr system nd I'm still collecting and playing it. Currently working on my mordor army followed by moria goblins (impuls buy of 300+ goblins, here on LAF luckily 50 of them are already painted to  wargame standard). Looks like lotr is having a rebirth on LAF  ;D

So you are all the guys driving up the ebay prices. Thanks.

It's a great set of figures. A solid set of rules. There is even a trickle of new figures/material coming out for it (and plenty of unofficially stuff that you can add to it). The game still has a pretty good following in forums and on blogs.

It's not a game to get into if you are hoping for a pick up game at the local gaming store, but otherwise, it's definitely worth getting back into.

I'm not an Ebay buyer prefer forum trades and local second hand shops and sites (new in box plastic balrog for €2! )  ;) Although metal miniatures not from the magazines are going for insane prices especially ringwraiths ...

I'm not a huge LOTR fan but I've heard the rules of the game are quite good and might be twisted to other purposes (I'd been wanting to run some large-ish battles in underground spaces, ala Moria).
The thing is, I never did manage to figure out which of the various rules sets I might want. The way GW brought them out seems a bit convoluted... at least at my lazy level of interest.
So how big a deal would it be to re-task the rules to some other setting and, assuming I want to run larger-than-skirmish games, which rulebooks would I want?

I use the "Return of the King" Rules. However, they certainly have their limits when you want to play with 100+ miniatures. I honestly have no idea what rules could be used then. Of course GW published the "War of the Rings" rules, which seem to work fine but I have never played them. Some folks Claim SAGA would be a cool alternative. Again, I haven't played Saga though I would love to give it a shot.

WotR has been designed for exactly that. I am not one for gaming with large units but I have tried them and they are not bad at all. That said I would not pay insane GW prices for something you with just a little bit of creativity (or glancing at other proprietary rules) could add to the basic LotR or RotK  rules.
