The mat in your post looks vastly different (and better quality!) than the previews on the shop website. Did you add the rocks and sand yourself?

How are your mats made?  What is the backing?  Do you use an acrylic binder?  It is hard to get a good idea what they look like from your site.  I purchased 2 50x100cm mats for $9.99 in the states from a craft shop.  They are flocked and backed on vinyl.  Not the best in the world, but to get started they do fine.  From this pic, your mat looks much nicer, even if of a different type, desert.  Can you post a clearer pic of your grass mat?

I agree; went to the site to find a fabric thing that looks like it would pill and or get fuzzy - nothing at all like the nice looking mat in the picture!

Not a chance of that!  The mats are amazingly tough material, extremely tight weave and resistant to wear.  Hobby Den will send out sample pieces if you are interested in testing it.
I had trouble cutting the samples I got as the industrial shears would not cut it without real pressure and the craft knife blade dulled almost immediately.

The new desert mats are available with the random black/grey shading painted on.  The only downside to them and why I did not order in the end, is that the material is so tough it does not conform closely enough to hills etc placed underneath for my 6mm scenery. Great for heavier 15/28mm figures and scenics but I could not get it to form tight curved gullies/wadis etc in the small scale.

The pictures of my NWF game here:

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=63337.0

show the Desert Mat in use without sand, etc added.  Eventually I intend to spray it with acrylics when it stops raining!

As Rob says, the mats are very tough material, won't pill at all and soften up with use.

I was so pleased with them that I'm looking at getting some stock to sell in the UK...
