New Player and a some figure questions
« on: February 12, 2014, 06:09:23 PM »
Hi everyone,

My name is Jon and I just picked up the rules to IHMN.
I've got both books and am looking at what to field first.

I was looking at Warlord's plastic British Infantry. They have regular pith helmets on, was the army still using the pith helmets at that time? I saw the new Prince of Wales Extraordinary Company and their helmets are different. Does anyone make a head like this that can be used with Warlord's figures?

I'm also looking for some USMC figures, there any companies that make them for this period? I have a friend who is an ex-Marine and I'm sure I could get him into the game if he could make a USMC force.

The army was still wearing sun helmets when in sunny climes, what the IHMN figures have is the headgear that was worn while at home in Blighty. Historically, while on campaign the British Army would have been clad head to toe in khaki while on foreign service during the time the game is set (whether that is so in the in-game alt-universe I cannot say). The Extraordinary Company are wearing home service uniforms.

I don't know if anyone sells separate heads with Home Service Helmets. It wouldn't surprise me if someone did though, as such things are much beloved and in demand by VSF gamers. The Warlord sprues do have one head in a glengarry cap, which is a viable alternative to a home service helmet. Unfortunately there aren't enough to give all the figures one.

Studio Miniatures do some packs of turn-of-the-Century US Marines in their Boxer Rebellion range. I'm sure some other firms do too, but they have slipped my mind.

Evilsam, I've yet to play but have begun to paint 5 companies with plans on at least 4 more...The small number of figures in a skirmish setting seems so cool...and the great thing with VSF is that you can give your guys any uniform (with in reason) you want...Studio Miniatures are great as well as North Star miniatures. I like Reaper miniatures as well and 3 of mu companies are made from them...

Hi Jon,

As we are in an 'alt-universe', as it has been described, you can use chaps in pith helmets if you like and refer any know-it-alls to me ok?  :D

Hey guys, thanks for the great tips!

@Plynkes- Those are nice models. Wasn't sure what you meant about seasickness tablets until I went to the page...wow! It would be great if a company did the "Blighty" version of the helmet as alternative heads. I like the look of them as something different. I'll have to keep looking.

@Stepman3- I'm having a blast looking up different models and thinking about custom companies to make. I want to get my feat wet with a few of the ones from the book but I have a few other ideas. I was thinking it might be cool to turn the characters from the board game Clue into a company. I had another idea about doing a company based on US professional baseball teams of the era. Can't seem to find minis for that but the thought of a bunch of loonies swinging bats and hurling baseballs all over the place sounds like fun.

@Craig- Thanks for the welcome. The books are great! I'm looking forward to the Far East book. I already have another friend in mind who is a big fan of Japanese culture to tempt with the game (the next book may just do the trick).

Brigade Games has US Marines in their Caribbean Empire Range:

http://brigadegames.3dcartstores.com/Caribbean-Empires_c_43.html

Tiger Miniatures has them--in caps, not Montana hats--plus US Infantry of the Spanish-American War in slouch hats, available in either Great Britain, here....

http://www.tigerminiatures.co.uk/page9.htm

or in the US through Recreational Conflict here (scroll down to Tiger Miniatures/28mm Colonials/SpanAmer War/Americans)....

http://www.recreationalconflict.com/

Pulp Figures has them with Montana hats as well, but some figures come with Thompson SMGs and BARs, which, in my opinion, are not appropriate for IHMN. They also are available with tin hats (not appropriate). But that's just my opinion. You'd have to make up stats for Thompsons and BARs if you want to use them.

On the Pulp Figures page are also Rocket Troops, which are an option for Marines. Again, some are equipped with Thompsons.

Paroom, available at Brigade Games, has Victorian US Infantry in Montana hats and slouch hats, which may or may not pass as Marines---I haven't researched them yet.

Welcome and good luck!

I mentioned you'd have to make up stats if you wanted to include SMGs in your Marine force, and making up new weapons is one of the joys [at least to me!] of IHMN.

For example, I made up stats for an Automatic Rifle for the fine fellow in green below which would work just fine for a Marine's BAR.

His Automatic Rifle has a SV Bonus +3, Range 24", 2 hands required, Pluck Modifier -2, and uses the same Special Rules as a Machine Gun does in the IHMN rules. The cost of the Automatic Rifle is 13 points.

The IHMN rules give you everything you need to make up your own weapons, talents, or mystic powers, plus how to figure their points cost.

I had another idea about doing a company based on US professional baseball teams of the era.

Now that's making me imagine a mash-up of Gangs of New York and The Warriors. Wonder what the Victorian-era Baseball Furies would look like?  :)

Plynkes:  That's a brilliant idea.  A Warriors scenario in the Victorian era.   :o

Reviresco have a baseball team in their role-play miniatures range. Uniform may be too modern for VSF without some conversion work:
