Fantasy minis from toys: the two-dollar monster challenge
« on: 04 March 2014, 12:52:23 AM »
Hi guys,

I have been thinking a lot lately about the way in which early fantasy gamers had to make do with whatever they could find as models -- like Gygax making dragons from plastic dinosaurs or using cheap toys from the drugstore to create iconic creatures like the owlbear or the bulette. I think there's a lot to be said for that kind of creative bricolage!

With that in mind, I've started a little contest over on my blog, which some of you might enjoy. You can find the background and intro bits here: here , and the contest itself here: here. I haven't mentioned painting in the contest rules, but if you want to paint things, that would be swell. I just didn't want to sound intimidating to non-painters.

My own submission includes this bad boy, which I found in Poundland.

If you like making new monsters and repurposing cheap junk, check it out -- I'm hoping for a lot of very creative entries.
