That looks really great. It looks like something out of an old 80's fantasy/historical movie, a proper model ship rather then a CGI blue screen backdrop. In other words, exactly the way I like it.

Yep, looking good.
Very good!

Love those sails!

I would use a little of what each of the fellas has suggested.
Drushbrush it quite liberally to reveal the grain a little more and THEN wash over the top to darken it down again.
With thin successive washes it will happen gradually and you just stop when you like the result.

Horses for courses, though.. ;)

Thanks for all the comments.  I have done some more dry brushing on the top deck using two different colours.  Now should I put on a thin wash to try and darken it down?

Wow, that's a BIG hot wire cutter  :o

I just bought a slightly smaller one today, and am delighted to see a project like this done with the aid of one  ;)

Great work on that ship, I've gone and downloaded the templates and stored the link for future reference (I knew Neldoreth's page, but not that he'd put up those construction plans/guides.
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

I've had the wire cutter for years and this is the first time I have really used it. Plan to use it more often now.

More dry brushing and I'm happy with the results.  Now to pinch Notlobs bolt throwers!

Even thought they are called Black Ships I find that models need to be a lot lighter than black. Otherwise they just appear to be blotches of undefined shape to the viewer. Models are just too tiny for the eyes to see details otherwise. So don't make it any darker.

Notlobs bolt throwers and some Mithril Miniatures corsairs painted up to crew it. I have some GW corsairs in my huge painting queue. Just waiting to add a ships wheel and anchor to the ship than onto the next one.

there are more pics on my blog
