Archie-
Boyes in Scarborough has a bigger selection than York - including all the Valejho paints and pigment powders.
But look in the hardware section rather than the toy department.

Also Boyes Scarborough has a really good cafe - does a splendid home made steak pie.

Sardoo-
There are other shops nearby that your wife might like. What are her interests?

Clothes, good wines and cats! Unfortunately when we go on holiday she has to be constantly reminded that the credit card's limit must not be seen as a target!  :)

Do they sell Cat Lady starter kits?

I dont get to Scarborough often but I will have to remember that when next over. Would you happen to know when the Scarborough game day will be this year. I went last year and really enjoyed it ... especially as it was my first game show in 20 years!

Irregular Miniatures are based in York - not sure if they allow visitors now though.

Just outside York are http://www.edencamp.co.uk and http://www.yorkshireairmuseum.org

Food wise - many a good place to eat (inc a great pasty shop) or hog roast  :o

If you are coming up country by car - pop over to North Lincolnshire and visit the Humber Bridge (pop in for a cuppa as well if you like).

Cheers! We're actually wending our way by train- which for some unknown reason always turns into an adventure involving some of the stranger denizens of this sceptred isle! And not always in a good way . . . Thanks for the offer of a cuppa - hospitality is clearly not dead in the land.

At last have the time to report on our trip to York! What a brilliant town!!! We had a great time! Did the Jorvik, the Castle Museum, bus and boat tour and so on. Went to the various shops recommended and generally had an excellent time. Drank a few amber nectars on behalf of all on here and even managed the train journey in relative peace - which was of itself miraculous.

So, thanks to all who made suggestions before we went. Much appreciated!

Now...does anyone know anything about Dubrovnik?  :D
