Warbands - old school orc
« on: 27 March 2014, 01:50:17 PM »
Hey all

I'm new here but have been browsing the forum a bit because I recently got the urge to start gaming and painting again. I've found that large scale armies are not for my thing, mainly because I have an urge to convert practically every model I can get so it's way too time consuming.

Therefore I've decided to focus on warbands from now on.

Here's the first bunch. I'm working on a woodelf-like warband and a greenskin warband at the moment.

The gang:

Looking great so far! I really like the elf on the wolf - I have never seen or thought of that type of conversion.  I guess I've been stuck in GW's and Tolkien's world for so long that the only thing that ride wolves are goblins or orcs.  The Wood Elf warband is terrific, great greens.

I'm with you, I am painting smaller armies to use for LotR SBG because I lose steam.

My entire hobby is basically building warbands now, I don't even play any wargames at the moment (15 week old baby doesn't help with that), I really just prefer boardgames when it comes down to it.

But at the end of the day I still like converting things so, I went down this road some time ago.

Really nice stuff, I like the use of the tharn top half on the glade guard lower hanf and vice versa to make some interesting conversions.

Keep it up.

Very nice and welcome to LAF! You've got some very nice painting going on there and the other minis have a lot of potential.

A fantastic couple of warbands, but I have to say that IMHO the goblins do not 'fit' with the arborians. They are a great set of minis, painted fantastically, but to me the styles clash. That said, the painting on all the minis is fantastic - especially that dryad which has a very scary looking maw - I'd hate to meet her on a dark and cloudy day on a trip through the woods.

Thank you for the comments and the warm welcome, guys.

I plan to use the warbands for playing Skulldred, because it's quick and easy and allows custom races and fractions.

A bit of progress on the goblins. I want each of them to have a different greenish skin colour.

Welcome on board. Really nice looking minis, I concur that the idea with wolf-rider elf is an excellent one, makes the Wood Elves very feral.

WELCOME ABOARD! I hope your stay is a pleasant one.
You certainly have some UBERCOOL minis. Those that are painted are BEAUTIFULLY done. AND those that are still in the W.I.P. stage have TREMENDOUS potentially. Keep up the FINE WORK!

As a Goblin Guy myself, I'm interested to see how your varying green skin color works out. I've shifted from the green to a reddish brown for the woodsy types, & a sand shade for the subterranean types.
I'd NEVER join a club that would have me as a member.  G.Marx

Thanks guys,

Your words are quite encouraging.

A while ago I was thrift shopping with my sister. She loves old clothes and such, and I happened to discover this small basket. It turned out to be a treasure trove! It was filled with dwarf figures from the 80's, some even older adventures and a few home made ( ?) Prince August figures. I bought the lot and have been stripping them from  paint. Some of them are still in the stripping jar, but these are now ready for some undercoating. The beastmen are some of my very first miniatures, but the rest are from the treasure.

I love the wolf. The dwarf with the mace is a standard bearer, that I converted, I really like the expression on his face, I think He will be the leader of  his own warband.
