The orange stuff is air-drying-clay. Very cheap and works fine. I used this tutorial http://www.croebern-1813.de/40235.html . It´s in german, but if you scroll down you see the steps. You need cardboard (paper or plastic) or styrodur to build the basic structure. Then cover it with double-sided tape. Roll the clay flat and press it on the basic structure. Cut out doors and windows and modell some "extras" like fragile finery. For the doors and other woodwork I use woodsticks from McD.
Glue the house on a plastic-card base.

Nice job! I've tried doing similar stuff with clay (packed earth floors out of DAS Pronto to be precise) but found it too hard to work with. It took a bit too much force to press as flat as I wanted it (which risked making the underlying material buckle) and once it had dried, I found it had shrunk enough to need retouching around the edges. That crackling effect is very cool though. I might just reconsider this modelling material again.

Very interesting stuff. Might have to implement something similar for some hovels later on.
