I use 2p for most things, but also find that for Napoleonics 1p is good, as I can rank the figures up in close order.
Theres more 28mm Superhero Madness at my blog, http://fourcoloursupers.blogspot.com/
And for Ultra-modern Wargaming check out Hotel Zugando at http://ultramoderngaming.blogspot.co.uk/

(Looks up size of a 2p coin on the Internet. Roughly an inch? Big coin for such a small denomination...)
Several companies (including Hasslefree and Heresy) sell 20mm round bases. I've found these quite a nice size for basic infantry grunts. If their (3mm) thickness bothers you, you could also use 20mm (fender) washers. But then you have a hole to fill in the centre of the base.

For a comparison, this pic has 3 sizes of bases in it:

The leftmost group has 20mm bases, the centre figure is on a 30mm base. The group on the right is 4 mini's on 20mm bases surrounding a mini on a 25mm base. All figures are "heroic 28mm" in scale.

I'm definitely in the low-rise camp on this one. Washers are fine (the hole is no problem).

I think 2ps are around 22mm which is just a bit too much.

I'm quite happy with 5 euro cent coins. They're 21,25 mm and the yfit the most bases from Foundry, Copplestone and such. I was taking 20mm washers for a while but did stop taking them as for some reason many skirmishing miniatures seem to be to large for 20mm. Also I like the thickness of the 5cent coins, quite perfect and looking good.

btw, British 2p coin is 25,9 mm and this would be way too big for my taste.

British 1p is 21mm, and much cheaper that a 5 cent Euro!

5 cent coin does actually look like a good size. Thanks for the tip Alex!

I have started to base some figures, singly, for skirmish, on pennies.  I don't plan to use them for proper big wargames, though, for that I love my big bases, in 8's.

Well, yes it would!

Thanks for all the great feedback guys! Stuff it, off for a life of painting figures one at a time in the sun  :D

And some inspirational pics from all concerned! So, final poll if anyone has the energy? What is a good 'universal' base size? I find 2p pieces in the UK just a little too big (and soon in short supply). What do you recommend?

Aha! pm if you need any advance recce!  :D
Especially as regards modelling and gaming (and basing, veering madly to stay on topic....)

Hey. I live in Malta too! I am experiencing the same basing anguish as you and have been recently multi basing for HoTT, if your interested PM me. I have also started multi basing for KoW which helps a lot.

If you want to continue gaming we have a friendly club that meets a couple of times a week for all types of tabletop gaming from board games to RPG to skirmish to wargaming.

Awesome guys! I'll be out late May and will definitely be in touch. Sadly selling off most of a 30 year collection, but keeping the very best stuff to tackle when the family are all settled in July.

Need to start hoarding those 5 cent coins.

2 €-Cent coins are 20mm and have that nice gap (and no hole like fender washers):
