Skin tones (stereotypes or not)
« on: April 21, 2014, 10:19:02 AM »
What colors do you use for "Asian" (in this case Chinese) generic skin tones on figures?

While there is a wide variety of skin tones in ethnic and "racial" descriptions and images, I would be interested in what color schemes you use for Asian characters in general I have to come up with paints for a "Chinese" female, (in Sumatran wilderness setting,) for a member of a IHMN company and probably multiple members in at least one more company based in the wilds of inland China.

I shudder when I recall the "Yellow" plastic skin tones on a toy set that had Pinkish Caucasian, Black African-American, and said Yellow Asian-American figures for doll house sets.  Something that implies "asian" with a minimum of negative stereotyping (there are positive stereotypes but that is another non-LAF discussion) would be my goal in painting this figure.

Gracias,

Glenn

I use the same shades for Asian, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and South American skin tones, namely a sort of cafe au lait tone. Whereas my European flesh shade has a peachy tone, this one has less pink in it, based more around yellows and browns.

For Chinese I would probably use the upper range of this palette, for a lighter shade than, say, Mongolians (who I paint with darker skin because of exposure to the elements as much as DNA).

I've found this article to be really useful for all different skin colours. http://www.coolminiornot.com/articles/1310-ethnic-skintones I don't use nearly as many shades, but it gives you a good idea of where to start.

For Asian skin, I normally use Vallejo's Cork Brown, wash with their Sepia Wash and then redo the highlights with Cork Brown.

I use Foundry 9B Boneyard for 15mm - with a wash and highlight it would probably do for 28s too.
