Microsol? I've used it for setting decals, many times, but don't understand how it would protect inkjet ink on top of print-your-own decal paper?

Basically you need layers of varnish, the more you have the better the result. For anyone who might want some sf decal fill yer boots...

Can I ask what decal paper and which printer you're using ?
I tried printing some Microscale decal paper with my Canon MP550 but the ink doesn't fill, it creates small pools.
Very nice if you're into pointillism, but not something I want

You need to make sure you're using inkjet decal paper, as you can also get decal paper for laser printers. I found this paper on Amazon UK, but others are available.

I'm not sure what the microscale one is, and can't find just plain decal paper on their site. If you are using inkjet paper, then it's maybe worth trying to find some Canon specific ones. Inkjet paper should work in any inkjet, but you never know

It said for inkjets on the package. There were 2 sheets in the package and I gave one to a friend. He encountered the same problem.
I have also tried to give the sheet a coat of anti-shine. That seems to give the ink something to cling to but the printout still looks a pointillism piece. 

The Amazon decal paper is unavailable for shipping to Belgium    That said, have you used it yourself ?
Canon is not an option as they only have iron-on transfer paper.

Zizi, I've had very good success with decal paper for ink-jets... I think that the make you got is unfortunately somehow defective.

Worked fine on a standard inkjet, and just 50p a sheet.

In the bad old days before computers we used to make our own transfers(decals) by painting/drawing/writing with enamel/ink/anything that would stick onto the adhesive side of lick and stick paper strip and then varnish them - matt varnish helped hide the edges of the transfer. I guess threrefore that the same sort of thing applies to inkjet printing, the varnish i) holds all the bits of the design together and ii) keeps the water off the printed design.

On a tangent, inkjet prints can be attached to plasticard with liquid styrene cement. It appears to weld it together and give a hint of waterproofing.
