U-Boat Captain, "What is your name, boy?"

Captain Mainwaring, "Don't tell him, Pike!"

Still makes me laugh!  lol

Making a new series? No thanks!

the main problem is that dads army is no longer funny.not to a modern audience.

To you, you mean  :)

You must be a hard man to please. As am I...  I am innoculated against most TV comedy. I find 'Miranda' monstrously unfunny. I never cracked a smile at 'Friends', 'Peep Show' or 'The IT Crowd'.

But when I catch the occasional episode of Dad's Army on their endless repeats, they still often make me laugh out loud in places.
As Cubs says, there are no jokes. It's the characters and situations that are absurd yet brilliantly drawn and beautifully acted, that give rise to the comedy.
Most modern comedy producers and writers for the 'modern' audience, could learn a great deal from Dad's Army... Top actors, perfect comic timing, character driven, with a real sense of affection and understanding for those characters, their frailties and motivations... However underserving they may seem of our sympathy.
In short, it gets so much right, even though it's 40 odd years old, it's still one of the funniest things ever made.

But yes, it's subjective - one man's comedy gold is another man's dreary tripe (See 'Miranda') :)

Thought I'd cheer you all up again!
It looks a good cast still not sure though, but we might all be pleasantly surprised

I have to confess that if they really intend to go ahead with this as they seem set to do then I'd be struggling to find better candidates for the roles.

Gambon as Godfrey looks especially choice.

Exactly.

I'm an enthusiastic Dad's Army fan, but on the face of it the only decent prospect of this venture is the casting. I'll reserve any further judgement until some rushes or trailers are released.
Don't!

Sarah Lancashire is in it (Mrs Pike)?

No news on who will play Hodges.

I might be wrong but the casting looks perfect.
