Last weekend, the May Day Bank Holiday I sallied forth up to the wilds of rural North Yorkshire for my annual meet up with a great group of fellow wargamers, we all met through the WD3 forum. Every year since 2011 we have got together from all over the UK and some from beyond to fight one large 2 day game. Some of you may have read about these in Battlegames magazine or more recently in Miniature Wargames. This year the big game was another 18th century epic, but two of us decided to play a 54mm Little Wars scenario that we had been working on for a couple of years. I had been busily collecting suitable troops and also painting a few for some years now with the intention of playing this out.
It was a simple scenario, with the Army of Imperial Albion defending a small country on the continent against the machinations of a pan European Republic, whi chose to invade it's smaller neighbour. The Army of Albion deployed to meet the sneaky Europans at a small crossroads near Featherstone Farm.
The field of battle.
The initial deployment of the army of Albion, as seen from their left flank.
The army of the Republic of Europa commence their attack.
A closer view of the troops on the Albion right flank, the Highland Brigade and heavy cavalry.
Her Imperial Majesty, Queen Betty of Albion and her personal guard hold the main road.
On the left flank, the Shire regiments supported by the Foot guards.
A mountain battery defends Grant Hill.
The Border Regiment advances into the hedgerows to hold the road.
As the Loyal Wessex Regiment advance on Griffiths Hill, the Northern Light Infantry advance to protect their left flank.
The enemy mass to advance on the crossroads.
On the right flank, Europans advance to meet the Highland Brigade.
Albion troops defend the hedgerows against Europan light troops.
Meanwhile the Wessex Regiment defend Griffiths Hill.
The Heavy cavalry advance on the right flank supported by the Loyal Mercian Regiment who move on a small hill to their front.
In the centre a large Europan regiment advances in column towards the crossroads.
Whilst their skirmishers move to take a brick wall opposite Griffiths Hill.
The Albion heavy cavalry charge two Europan regiments and a fierce melee ensues.
Despite inflicting heavy casualties, the Albion cavalry retire in disorder.
A crunch is coming!
After a prolonged musketry duel the Wessex regiment sees off the Europan skirmishers, and the Northern Light infantry advance to take the wall. A regiment of Foot Guards moves up in support.
The Loyal Mercian regiment siezes the small hill and now threaten the Europan right flank.
Reformed the Heavy Cavalry and the Highland Brigade prepare to advance on the crumbling Europan right flank.
A Europan artillery battery moves up in support of it's attack on the crossroads.
The Northern Light infantry cut the road, and prepare to take the enemy's left flank.
The Europan advance to the crossroads is blunted by combined artillery and musketry fire, and the hapless Europans retire with devastating losses. The day belongs to Albion.
