Wow, they are gorgeous!!!

Thank you sir!

Cracking! :-* :-*

And you!
Nice one fella  :D

cheers

James

It really all down to the figures. They're bloody brilliant. But shh. I'm sure the little one's ego will not be able to handle it if we talk so loudly.

Gorgeous, stop tempting me with new periods......  :o

Prod, prod, prod - with all the time you going to have, why not!? Mexico has it all + all the terrain you will ever make for this can be used for sooo many different things (pirates, middle east, south america, more mexican stuff, list goes on)

Some other crap eh?  ::)  lol

Its not too late to order those other figures ;)  :D

And the finished figures look great :-*

I honestly don't know how that word got in there. Must be the autocorrect.  ;)

I would never dream of ordering more stuff.  ;D What would I do with all that stuff!?!

Sweet.  Boot Hill minis are particularly characterful.  8)

Yes, I agree. I seem to be fond of characterful ranges of figures.  ;)

Nice job :)

Vielen dank, mein Herr!

Wish mine looked that good!

Gracias,

Glenn

Well, thanks! I hope I can keep up the 'level' over the next few months.

Good job, I enjoyed painting these as well.  :)

Yes, you almost made me postpone my efforts with that brilliant show.  lol

Fantastic paint jobs.

Cracking job :-* :-* :-* :-*

Thanksy thanks! I'm glad you like it.

Muchos gracias mi amigo!

Oh, well! Here we go, I may have accidentally ordered a few more Mexicans to join the ever growing army of Santa Anna that I'm not making.

In that process I've been trying to find out if the Mexican units would actually appear as ragtag as some people present them - with white, grey, blue and whatnot mixed in in the same unit with regards to trousers. But I've yet to come to a conclusion. Any pointers?

Regarding trousers. The jury is still out... lol

Some sources suggest that Santa Anna's army when on the long march from Mexico to Texas wore their white summer fatigue dress and only changed into their dress uniforms before entering San Antonio de Bejar. This does make sense Knowing what we know about Santa Anna he would have wanted his army to march into the town in their finest clothes looking the part.

To contradict this it has been mentioned on that long gruelling march how many of the soldados wore out their clothes and shoes and their uniforms were ragged by the time they began the seige of the Alamo.

The army was also going through a uniform change in 1834-35 so its quite possible there was much variety in the clothing within each regiment. Also bear in mind the idea of Permanente and Activo battalions (The professionals and the conscripts with what was issued to who)

So I think anything goes with the trousers. Regulation mid blue with red stripe, white cotton or dark blue with red stripe and occasionally grey.

Whatever you think looks best.  :)

Take your pick with which looks best (even though you're not actually painting any;)):

The white summer fatigue uniform is kind of iconic thanks to John Wayne:

You're quite right and I do always follow that rule (you'll notice the added red stripe on bottom of the trousers of the Presidiales - pure fiction! Hope I didn't cause any heart attacks).

I do however try to use a modicum of accuracy.

It would make sense to have summer/regular uniforms mixed. But I don't understand how a unit would end up with 'all of the above'. I suppose my favourites right now are in fact the all dark blue and the all white. Let's make a unit of each of those for starters.  ;) :D ;D lol lol

But thanks for the thorough answer!!! I love this forum!

Brilliance!!!

I have to make the pom poms in the flag colours though. :D

I can see why Wayne would have gone for the White uniforms. It looks very distinct. And cool!

Hello all

Also, regarding uniforms in campaign, dont forget that a soldier in campaign would use what he could especially on an army that had real problems in obtaining new items.
For example, in campaign on the peninsular war a british or french napoleonic soldier would wear any items during marchings and fights but on parade they would look prety and with regulation equipment.
The mexican army suppliers where corrupt and most items would never reach the common soldier so a variety of items (without exagerating) would seems ok.

Cheers

Rag tag is the way to go for any army.

Unless they are on parade. Soldiers have always used whatever equipment they had and or liked. If your summer issue pants were worn out you would wear your winter issue until you were lucky enough to be issued new ones.

Even when you look at modern pictures of soldiers from Irak of Agfghanistan you can hardly find to identical ones. Because everyone has some form of custom gear from home.

And nice painting - As usual.

Ah, well - everybody's in agreement then.  ;) :D

I guess it will just be down to the banner who's who then...

I did a small colour test for a soldado (I suddenly remembered the BLAM tombola prize of 2012) for the Mexican army that I'm not making

This is a bit quicker than the presidiales, but then that's what it takes for me to see myself painting 40 of these.  lol

To be honest one of my lights went out when I was painting, and I blame the crude strokes on the gun barrel on that. The rest is what the figure looks like more or less. No magic light on this one. ;)

Thank you very much!

I'm having a bit of trouble convincing the black clad fellow to look smart in... black! Oh well, I hope I will get it sorted. It was never my favourite colour.  lol
