Is Cote d Arms 'Tan Earth' the same as Gw Graveyard Earth?
« on: June 15, 2014, 11:24:09 AM »
Hey all,

Just as the question says. I use a lot of Graveyard Earth and am running out, and I know that Cote d Arms is the old Gw paint range - but are these two paints equivalent?

Ta.

Not sure about Tan Earth - it's not on the big compatibility chart anyway: http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Range_Compatibility_Chart

No, not at all really. They are quite different.

Graveyard Earth on the left, Tan Earth on the right. Not a very good photo, I'm afraid, I took it in a bit of a rush. But it does at least show they aren't the same.

I use Vallejo 'Flat Earth' a lot. It's one of my favourite stock colours. It doesn't look too far from Graveyard Earth to judge by the swatch provided there by Plynkes.

The Captain is right, it is almost exactly the same.
I use Flat Earth to undercoat about 95% of all my figures nowadays.

Thanks a bucket for the photo - they really are rather different. Humbug.

I just ordered some Vallejo 'Earth'....is 'Flat Earth' a different shade or have I ordered the wrong colour from the right company?  :?

FYI, Vallejo's "Flat Earth" is slightly different, being a little redder and a little darker than Graveyard Earth. But it's worth pointing out that both are essentially a mud colour. So unless you're trying to exactly match some previously-painted figures, you'll be okay.

If you ARE trying to match previously painted figures, try adding just a little bit of a sickly sort of yellow (i.e. not too saturated and not too much lighter than the brown), and that might give you an exact match or near enough.

I bought an 80ml bottle of Siena Natural acrylic craft paint from my local art store and whipped up my own batch. Forgot what colors I added, but it was fairly easy to match.

I'm tired of paying huge prices for cool little bottles with only 20ml of paint inside.

Well, the problem with craft paint is how much thicker it is for the same ratio of pigment. If you want properly thin coats, you need to use minis paint.

I do use craft paints myself for my terrain and bases though.

I've painted my base edges Graveyard. Earth for years. I'm actually working on a new project but thought I'd look to see if there was not a easy match out there to just be uniform, but I'm being rather pedantic.

Do craft paints work for base rims?  In the past I've all ways had trouble with getting good coverage and having brush marks in the surface.

Yep.

Or you can just add water  :)

I use a lot of craft paint.

Craft paints do vary a lot though. There are some truly horrible, thinly pigmented, glutinous ones out there. But there are also some highly pigmented good ones, really no different to miniatures paints. Just a great deal cheaper...

Which brands are the good ones?

I've painted my base edges Graveyard. Earth for years.

Dats the color I use for my bases (for years) and the one I whipped up has done a great job.

If your getting brush marks then you need to cut it a bit more with water.

I live in Spain and the manufacturer is called Titan Acualux. Nice paints.

The craft paints I've tried have all been too glossy and thinly pigmented. I only use them on terrain projects and would never dream of painting miniatures with them. I know many do, but it's just not worth the hassle for me.

If you operate on a shoe-string budget, have lots of hobby time and/or paint a lot then I can see why searching for cheaper alternatives might be an option.
