I just primed the vehicle.  Then painted it in the basic colour I wanted.  After that a wash.  On the truck I used a chestnut wash.  Then get one of those triangle, dense makeup sponges.  Dab it in the original colour but remove most of the paint, dry-brush-like.  Start dabbing.  It leaves all the cracks dark and gives a smooth air-brush look.  Use a lighter colour to hi-lite with the same dabbing technique.  I added a couple of yet lighter hard line hi-lites at the end.  Make sure your sponge has hardly any paint on it.  Once you try it it becomes fairly self explanatory.

Thanks to Mr. Peabody for turning me on to this.  Maybe he can post a better tutorial as I can't find the original one I read.

Looking ace!

I paint base coat with brush, then slop on a burnt umber wash, DAB it off with a cotton rag/kitchen paper, let dry, and layers of super dry dry brushing. who needs a fancy air brush?

Agreed! Haha. But I'm very impressed with his results and like how smooth and convincing the final product is. Worth it I'd say. You can cut corners and wash larger sections at once, and drybrush with a more extreme highlight to make it faster but it does sacrifice quality a little. yours looks great though, and pretty similar I think. find a workflow that works for you Gary.
